Terminology: Looking for an electric scooter

In looking for an electric scooter for my environment, I have run across a maze of terms for electric bikes. It's pretty confusing. First, there are bicycles that are electric bikes, and then there are electric skateboard-type machines noted as bikes, and scooters that are listed as electric bikes. the scooters, like I am looking for, are nothing like the bicycles and skate-board thingees that turn up in searches for an electric scooter. This forum would be a good place to set things straight. It looks to me like there should be some over-riding term like "personal electric transportation." And under that there would be the various subdivisions: like bicycles, Scooters, skate-board thingees. Just thinking.

Marketing and laws drive the terminology. There are scooters that have pedals added so they become "bicycles" that people will never pedal. Using the pedals as a foot rest. As long as companies want to play on the fringe of legality, the terminology will remain cloudy!
