Specialized App stops tracking if I pause ride and check a different app

Lately, I’ve been using the Specialized App for my ride. It does a good job capturing my riding data including routes, milage and bike data such as cadence and battery status. But, there appears to be an annoying problem. If I pause my ride and access a different app on my iPhone, the ride tracking is discontinued and does not restart and I cont my ride. Is this a bug or a design flaw? Or am I doing something wrong?

Hi: I don’t know the Specialized app, but I use RideWithGPS on my iPhone. There’s a stop button, but you don’t want to use that if you’re just taking a break from your ride; the app automatically knows when you’ve paused your ride and when you’ve re-started it and you don’t need to do anything to make that happen.

So, my question is, are you doing something actively like pressing a button or shutting down the Specialized app when you bring up something else on your phone? You probably know this, but you don’t want to shut down the riding app just to start up something else.

I just started using the Specialized app, and I stop to take photos or look at a text while it is running. I have not had it stop recording my ride when accessing other apps on my iPhone. yesterday I did not hit stop, but it did stop because I turned off the TCU on my Creo. I will check again on todays ride. I know other biking apps have an Auto-pause setting which can be enabled or switched off. Not sure if the app has that option. But for me.... in Settings > Apps > Specialized, my Background App Refresh is enabled.

Interesting. The Specialized app (SA) has recorded 195 SL rides on my Android phone (Samsung Note20) — all in their entirety. I go to other apps all the time while SA's running, and they never affect it. That includes RideWithGPS and Google Maps, both of which compete with SA for map- and GPS-related resources.

Hope you get this resolved. On a phone with an OLED display, SA in dark mode uses MUCH less phone battery than RideWithGPS. It's also a very powerful tool — especially if you're interested in nuts and bolts like rider vs. motor power and in fine-tuning assist mode tunings on test rides.

My test today of the App on an iPhone. it continued to record after stopping midway to take a photo and send email as a test...I never send email during a ride. my phone goes to sleep I do not reopen the Specialized app. I only tap record and then press the main button to put it to sleep, then into in my jersey pocket it goes.

Based on the info from @BEC111 , I suspect his problem is that he is closing the app when he brings up the phone or photo app (whatever he is doing when he’s off his bike)… It’s very easy to make that mistake on the iPhone, especially if you ride with the app keeping the display on. Or, it could be that the TCU turned itself off after a while and that caused the app to stop.

@BEC111 if it’s the latter, follow @edobici_forza ’s advice and see if there’s some option in the Specialized app to keep the app running when the TCU turns off and/or increase the amount of time that your bike stays on when you stop. I have a setting on my bike (not a Specialized) that lets me vary that, and mine stays on for 10 minutes, but RideWithGPS is not connected to the controller so it never stops recording the ride like you experienced.

If you’re issue is that you’re closing the app, just click the button on the right and that will turn off the display and lock the phone. Then when you re-open it, you’ll be able to get the new app running by pressing it without stopping the Specialized app.

On an Android Ver 10 and Turbo Tero.
When I pause a ride (STOP button) I need to hit RESUME to start recording again which I sometimes forget to do with other apps open. If I shut the bike off for short time the ride will both stop and resume automatically provided I never hit the STOP button (Note: Auto Record:Auto-End is ON but the timer is set to 2 hrs). If I hit the STOP button before I shut off the bike it will not automatically resume when I turn the bike back on and I will need to manually go in and hit RESUME.
