Someone Left the Bike Out In the Rain

My bafang ultra is IP65 but I noticed gaps where the rubber grommet is supposed to seal the cables going into the motor housing. I filled the voids with silicone so water should not be able to find it's way in. I don't know how it could have this rating when you can actually see where water would get in. Speed controller is inside the motor and potted

If you've ever opened up the motor you would see that rain and/or spray would not get thru there. Also that rubber grommet ends up in the motor mount and not exposed directly to the elements.
IP65 does not protect against submersion.

If water is going to get around anything first it's at the crank shafts where it's just a bearing and grease.

IMO, with the pace of innovation/changes/upgrades in the ebike market and the proprietary designs of everything involved, you kind of have to look at the standards as a starting point to safety/performance, not a guarantee. Even a specific bike that gets certifications is likely to run into some production changes that compromise something… rubber grommets, frame manufacturing changes… you name it.

I don’t mean to be a cynic, but with such little standardization in the business, it’s no surprise to me that things are where they are.

The last time I opened the Fat Boy's motor I sealed everything with silicone gasket sealant. Water still got in. I suspect that @Gionnirocket is correct about the cranks/BB.

I have a perfect Gray-Poop-On bike here for him. It is all chrome and leather owned by a gay guy in the town of Sonoma. It looks totally classic and space age from 1962 but it is mint. It gleems and looks like an immaculate bike that JFK would ride to a picnic on the Vineyard. The tan walls match the leather and it has a polished 8-Alfine hub and deep aero rims. It is chrome and tan. A two chord White Stripes song.

Barracudas like salt water. They are like salt water pike or muskies that hunt baby ducks.
