Shimano shifters

+1 on the derailleur hanger.
Swapping out the rather flimsy OEM hanger on my bike with a quality one, made a big difference. I improved shift performance even more by investing in an alignment tool.

Maybe something is bent and not lining up properly. I have had three and they all worked fine. I had to bend some parts so components would line up properly. Look straight on from behind the bike to see if all looks lined up and straight and nothing looks twisted.

like most hanger tools it rotates both around the attachment point and the measuring rod. I am more pointing at the price difference between the stuff from Jason than on the usability and their "super-powers".

and yes I do know a few guys wrenching for the national cycling teams. And they do not use Abby tools, just a bunch of other brand (surprisingly not that many use American brands))

Right, but on the Abbey, the probe head swivels so you dont have to retract the probe to get it by the seat stay, rack, etc. Are their tools worth the money? That's a personal decision. I also know a lot of pro team and neutral service mechanics and this is what they use, because its small, light, and works best.

It is the DHAG!!!
It could also be a very common assembly flaw. Young guys will put pliers on shift housing zip ties and sinch them down all the way. This quickly collapses the housing at those pinch points. The test is to see if you can slide the housing inside the zip ties.
MicroShift makes nicer MTB trigger shifters that retail for $16.
If anyone has or runs across someone with a twist shifter, MicroShift makes push/push trigger shifters that are a huge improvement and for both 7 and 8 speed derailleurs but also 7 and 8 speed Nexus and Alfine hubs.
