Security of eBike

Wishing that the ebike computer monitor could disable the motor and the battery and only the owner with a password could unlock it. Similar to iPhone.

My previous ebike had a removable monitor and no on and off button on the battery. The only way to start the motor was to start it using the monitor.
For quick grocery store runs I removed the monitor and locked the bike.
My hope was if someone would break the lock they had to pedal a 55 pound bike to steal it.
My current Specialized Vado 5.0’ monitor is hard wired and the battery has an on and off button so the old way of first line security is not possible.

The battery is removable but too much work to take it out for a quick grocery run.
May be after a while the seals are looser so it is easier to put it back in after removal. Even then it is a cumbersome task.

What do you have on your bike?

Any ideas from high tech folks out there to protect these expensive machines?

I do have an insurance which I hope I never have to use.

Multiple layers of security are always a good thing when it comes to preventing bike theft. The longer you can delay a thief, the more likely he will be to move on to an easier target. Disabling the electrics on a bike might deter a "casual" thief from riding away with the bike but a serious one would cut the lock and throw the bike in a van or pickup.

If the display and battery are easily removable, then by all means do so. IMO, two or three separate mechanical locks like a good U lock and a handcuff style chain lock are a better approach. Avoiding cable locks or those easily cut with bolt cutters is also a good idea.

Motion sensor alarms and GPS trackers are good additional measures but to me, several quality mechanical locks and a good insurance policy is the way to go.

When I am touring/camping... and around humans, I use several locks when I leave my bike unattended, 2 to lock all 4 panniers closed and to the frame, 2 Ti locks that lock the wheels and frame to something secure, another locking my trailer closed and too the bike frame. It doesn't really matter since any lock can be cut, but it will slow them down some and would put on a hell of a fireworks show. The best protection I have found is a full opaque bike cover that doesn't let anyone see (and convent) my bike. I have also used a battery-powered motion detector also. But best way to keep it safe iso sit on the seat and pedal. Cheers.

Q- how do you use the motion detector ?

It mounts where ever you want on the bike and has a keyfob (WAY too large) like cars do. Park and lock the bike put the cover on and activate the alarm. If someone could see the alarm one good swing of a hammer would... circumvent it, however.

Thank you. Very nice bike set up and exploration !
For that kind of a load, what motor and battery are you using ?

When ya try living on your bike it becomes more in several ways.

Mirrors - I wouldn't ride without them and I use a Garmin GPS with the Varia radar that shows me approaching objects.
GPS - Garmin mount
Bar Bag mounts - The Arkel big bag ($200+) mounts really well, easy to remove, and even easier to overload.
Glasses case - Old eyes, I use the Quadlock universal adapter ($15) and a Quadlock stem lock mount ($30) on the bars.
Phone - The mount is a Quadlock handlebar mount ($50).
Brakes - I got brakes with motor cutouts and don't need them with the Rohloff Speed-hub.
Throttle - I have gone through three different types and think I have what works best for me finally.
Big Green Button - A motor cutoff that lets me pedal at anytime without any assist. A Big power saver once you learn how to best use it ($12)
Eggrider- Control interface ($100) My choice after two others.
Rohloff shifter
Fugoo remote on the handlebar stem
Bandana
Various camera mounts occasionally
And finally, a knock-off double-ended RockBros waterproof bar-bag hanging under the Arkel ($12 bid on eBay).

This is how I ride from camp to camp with a full load. When I do single track all day I will strip off about 90% off. Yes, it's a lot of s*it and it is constantly changing.

I just mounted a new BaFang BBSHD mid-drive set at 25amps, and I have two EM3 30Ah triangle packs lithium packs. You can find everything I have online with the exception of the modifications that I have had performed to the bike and trailer themselves.

What would you consider the maximum sustainable speed at 25A? BTW I suggest that is maybe the best setting for commuters and controller health.

Not really my thing, excess speed that is. With my gearing (which IS the dominant factor for speed), I can top 35 mph on level surfaces. If I am on a well-surfaced road, with no traffic and little side access, great visibility, on a perfectly dry warm day, no tailwind, 70 lbs pressure in Schwalbe touring tires, eaten my Wheaties for breakfast, and most importantly... for some reason don't care what-so-ever how much power I waste trying to "go fast"... I think that's Heaven, isn't it? I haven't ridden there yet, even then I wouldn't be thinking speed. I can ride comfortably at 30 mph using 60% of my 30 Ah pack in about 35 miles. That's sustained speed. If you want to build an electric motorcycle for nothing but maximum speed I am sure 50 mph is easily obtainable... for a few miles at least.

Is that a custom made rear rack with suspension ?? All ebikes should come standard with that.

Tout Terrain, Panamaericana (2016). The modification I have had is on the frame, small tabs to catch the Arkel pannier hooks, minor but very helpful. The trailer has been modified to mount a Fugoo speaker on the tongue and a hinged cage to hold a SunCapture 300W solar panel and various camping gear.

That is quite the setup.
Solid bike and components. Are you traveling around the country or something?

Nice bike fella!
Tout eBike is incredible, but a lousy choice in motors. With a Grin motor, eZee or even Bafang it's stellar!
