Rize RX 2020 ebike maintenance and Repairs

Does anyone who owns a Rize RX 2020 ebike have any information about maintenance and repairs that this ebike might need, I am thinking about buying a Rize RX 2020 ebike and I would like to know how they are holding up...

Thanks,
Ron Stephenson

I have an RX Pro, but it's only got maybe 150 miles on it. This is my 4th ebike, 2nd 1000+w performance bike, and I don't see anything unusual on it that might be a maintenance headache or require anything unusual. Solid bike using name brand components, which is about all you can expect! I'm loving this one. The RX is a geared hub drive version of the same bike I have, and it appears to be just as well made. -Al

I have both the RX and the RX Pro. I have about 1,500kms on the RX (Bought in spring 2020), and no major problems. Had to tighten a few bolts here and there, but nothing worth worrying about. I did perform a thorough lube of everything and fine adjustment of the derailleurs at about 250kms, but just out of my own OCD. It probably could have gone the whole year without it. Otherwise, just a basic chain lube/wipe down every week, I rinse it off after each ride, and check the pressures every few rides, which i've only slightly topped up once.

I did change out the seat and grips to some fancier ones, and added an additional headlight, but that's just personal preference.

I own the RX and have had it since October 2020. I’m in Ontario. It’s a powerful Ebike With great torque. It’s heavy and I’m a senior rider. It is not for the squeamish.
The sizing chart on the website needs to be modified to stress that it’s for taller riders. Anyone 5‘7“ and I’d suggest up to 5’9”
will have trouble riding this bike, if they don’t have at least 30” of step over height
I’m 5-91/2 close to the 30 “ inseam size and it’s difficult to slip forward off the saddle with out it jamming you in the behind and my saddle is as far back on the post as possible.
I suggested to Rize, by way of a review, that they concider putting more belly in the top tube and have it start earlier. This would accommodate the shorter riders better.
So it has some design flaws in the frame and I’d say if your at least 5’ 10 with a good 30“ stand over height you should be ok, but It is tight Stepping forward off the saddle
My gripe, is with brakes. They have been temperamental right out of the gate, and on this topic Rize has not been much help. I’ve had to solve the brake issues by myself such as improperly aligned pads
intermittent weird scrapping sounds and intermittent chattering. But the brakes do work. Likely warped rotor or something stuck on the pad, dirt. All solvable but.....
Rize is a distributor of Ebikes with their brand on it. They are mostly built in China. They don’t have people on hand who know how to assess common issue with their bikes They don’t have repair techs. If it’s warranty you need thats about all you’ll get from them. I haven’t had to do warranty yet so we’ll see!
This is a powerful Ebike That’s why I bought it. Other mid drives I tried didn’t have enough power for steep hills.
I have never owned hydraulic brakes before and they do work well but like I said they are finicky so I’m still learning about them.
Im torn a bit about having spent a good dollar on a Ebike “online“ and typically if you buy a bike from a Local bike shop they will provide initial adjustments as part of the sale, if they are a reputable shop .

I would have hoped that when I contacted Rize about my 3 brake issues, they might have offered to pay for me to take the bike in and have it adjusted by a local pro!
Summing up: great ride, fun bike, good value for the money but I’d think again about buying an eBike online. If I lived in BC Canada maybe the squeaky wheel would get some grease.

musicman, my front brake (2020 RX Pro, new in Oct.) started "chirping" early on, but I was able to break it in where it is now silent without even adjusting it. When it was doing it's chirping thing, I would give it a quick hard stab and it would shut up for a while. Had to do that quite a few times - but I had a set of "organic" pads on order just in case - so of course I didn't need them! I used that front brake (gently!) exclusively quite a bit meanwhile, and it was silent within 20-30 miles. Now at 200 or so, it's perfect.

With these "consumer direct" bikes, you do assume the role of final assembly, tuner, and inspector as part of the deal. Part of that, is assuming that things like the derailleur adjustment, as well as the brakes, are adjusted properly. Nobody is going to bail you out here. If you want to take it to a shop, it'll be on your dime. If the brakes continue to be an issue for you, I would really recommend a change to organic pads. They are much more forgiving and way less likely to make noise.

All that said, it would be nice to be able to contact a REAL bike tech at Rize. They have a message taker answering the phone, whose job is to ask you for a "recording" of any issue, so he can forward that to somebody that might have a clue. He'll tell you straight out he's NOT a tech if you ask him.... -Al

Thanks Al
All good, lessons learned, it will work out and I’ll get the hang of the brakes and learn how to adjust them properly
Just not too happy that they requested sound bites and then found out they don’t have an experienced Tech on board, so they wasted my time and energy with multiple emails that went nowhere. They would be better off telling there customers up front but at least they make it look like they want to help
I’m on my own and I’m ok with that now I’m an old fart and love to righteously complain

Agreed on the sound bites being a waste of time - and the frustration of trying to work with somebody that's not a tech. I called him out on it pretty quickly. It was clear to me he was a customer service tool in short order. Somebody told him to ask people to ask for pictures or a recording, and he's doing that. Seems like they could get some college kid with prior bike shop experience in there pretty cheap..... -Al

Does anyone know how to change out the front light on the RX? Mine is not working (manual switch is on and back brake light works - sensor seems good). If I purchase a new front light will it fit the plug? Is there a certain type of light I should buy or something that will tell me that the light will fit the plug on the RX?
Thanks for your help!

If I recall, someone recently did an upgrade and discovered there was a relatively small voltage capacity on the stock plug since it routes through the display, so you would have to get a light that works within that range. I want to say 6V 0.5 amp? Don't quote me. I'll try and take a pic when I'm home tomorrow of the plug.

But worst case, find a 6V light you like, and just the cut the existing plug off the dead one to splice onto the new one.
