Rails to Trails Coast To Coast Across the USA

It's a future thing, and will happen some day, probably when I am gone.Takes money.

I haven't ridden the Hennepin canal path, and I'm not that far away, but we're planning on going to Missouri this year for the Katy trail since I won't need a machete.

I must just be lucky, but the Hennepin was freshly mowed when I rode it. I find it a great ride, but like everything else in IL, it suffers from budget woes. A trip on I-55 north of Plainfield two weeks ago cost me a ruined car tire.

I'm thinking a little but powerful ferry would be a good thing.

I bet you could find someone in Vantage with a boat to run you across.

There is a video of a car crossing the I90 bridge I watched out of curiosity and although I know it is illegal to ride on I90 having ridden the Astoria Megler bridge numerous times here if timed right it looks less sketchy than that crossing.

The Astoria Bridge has a lower speed limit. The limit on the Vantage bridge is 70mph. The Vantage Bridge is often windy. I've had to slow down my driving a few times because of the wind. One time, when I had a Datsun Pickup with a very square canopy on the back, I was having problems and a semi pulled up alongside and sheltered me from the wind. The bridge has no shoulders or sidewalk. There is often hay blown up against the sides--hay is hauled to the west side over this bridge. The road climbs out of the river on both sides so truckers are trying to keep their speed up (although they have to slow down for a curve on the east side) to make it up the hills. Riding the Vantage Bridge is not a good thing to do. I hate driving on it during windy times.

This is the I-90 bridge crossing we are discussing. This is filmed going west towards Vantage and Seattle. Looks like traffic is light.

Yes, the Astoria Megler bridge is sketchy, but the shoulder is much wider (still not very wide) than the central section of the I-90 bridge at Vantage and the traffic is going much more slowly. Of course the shoulder on the Astoria-Megler bridge is littered with dead birds.

I read somewhere that cyclists crossing the bridge at Vantage were putting down road flares before the bridge to slow the traffic down a bit...

Don’t get me wrong I am not promoting riding the Vantage bridge and would either take a cab or a boat.

The AM bridge is only two lane which increases the danger level. One time while they were working on the raised section the flagger let me go early and I got mostly across the bridge before the pent up traffic caught up to me.

I've crossed that bridge about ten times over the last 30 years on a bike. Every time I've crossed it I've sworn I'll never, ever, do that again. Although on an e-bike at least you can put the bike on Turbo and blast through it quickly, which you probably won't be able to do if you've ridden from South Bend.

One of the other downsides of the Vantage crossing is that you have to go about two dozen miles out of your way to make that crossing. All in all I think it will be better if (when) they restore the railroad bridge. Then it becomes one long-ish day between Ellensburg and Othello.

I suppose you could haul an inflatable kayak and paddle across...

We have had the trails for a long time. (West Virginia). I've rode them on bikes but not electric yet. I'll accomplish that this year.

The Green-brier River Trail and the western half of the North Bend Trail are two of my favorites in West Virginia.
