I live in Vancouver, BC - a mountainous terrain and I could not get up the hills without an electric bicycle. Just bought a StromerST-1 S almost new, with the 522Wh battery and this is what I have observed:
- when I start with a fully charged battery (100% - 95%) whenever I used pedal assist uphill, there is a heavy motor vibration/noise that actually works adversely - I mean not even helping at all.
- when the battery change drops bellow 95%, it works flawless (meets my expectations).
I called a dealer and they explain to me that when the Li-ion is fully charged its voltage is higher (dah!) and that makes the motor/controller turn on/off more often - I guess some low frequency PWM there. I have electronic understanding and I still believe that there is a problem with the motor control loop - possibly in the software.
>>>> The dealer suggested this is a common problem and we should not press to hard on the pedals (ask less of the pedal assist) or change to lower gears when the battery is more than 95% charge. What a pity, I still believe this could be fixed by software, but no-one would do that ... I could try to do something about it, but need their source code, compiler and a way to update software. Well, the bike is great otherwise !
