Paralyzed by indecision - Need to choose a budget 750w (or so) Hub bike.

I hate to do this, but I'm paralyzed by indecision. I've been trying to decide which ebike to get for over a year now. And I think I've finally narrowed it down to 2 (maybe 3) but I need some help.

I live in MA, USA, so choices for shops carrying more bargain-priced bikes are few and far between - my budget is more $1500-$2000 anyway, so big names like Specialized and Trek are probably out. I'm a heavier rider (~275#) so that's a factor. I will also possibly be pulling a Weehoo trailer with a 6 year old in it, on occasion, but if/when I do we won't be hitting any extreme hills.

The point of getting an ebike is to help with hills, and just get me out on the bike more often for both recreation and exercise - I avoid it because I have hills in every direction from my house and I don't want to often deal with carting my bike elsewhere in order to ride it.

I like the RadRover, but I'm concerned that given the "it's not really a 750W motor" issue could make hills troublesome giving my size. I also don't really need a fat tire bike as I'll mostly be on pavement or groomed trails.

Also, a bike that's a Class 2 would be best since I don't want to have to avoid bike paths (though all the legal issues are still fairly unresolved in MA as I understand it).

I recently started looking at both Rize and Biktrix.

Looks like I can pre-order a Juggernaut Hub Duo with just a single battery (for now) for $1899. - Wouldn't ship until April, but I can live with that.

Rize has some stock problems too, but I could get a Rize X for $1999. I read a few threads here the last few days indicating Rize's support can be hit or miss?

I feel like I've narrowed it down to the RadRover ($1599) or the Juggernaut Hub Duo ($1899). So the question is, is the equip that the Juggernaut comes with really worth the $300 extra (which is $400 more than I planned on spending when I started this quest)?

I know that repair and upgrade parts are pretty readily available for the Rad, and I could likely upgrade it to the "real" 750Watt for $250 or so, but then I'm already at the price of the Juggernaut. And I know some other larger riders have said the Rad's power is plenty for them to get up hills. Are parts relatively easy to get for Biktrix? How's their support vs Rad (keeping in mind I'm not local to either of them).

Bonus questions: Should I really reconsider the Rize X? or even the Rize? Maybe the 500Watt would be good enough? Is there some other brand I should be looking at? I considered Himiway for a while but some things I've read here have removed it from my list.

Thanks,

Simon

Any particular reason why you're sold on hub drive?

Is it because of price? I'm asking because it sounds like hill climbing capability is important to you.
Primary price, yes. Also I understand that having a throttle can be somewhat of a luxury on mid-drives.

For what it's worth I have a 2020 Rad Rover Step Through purchased in Apr. last year. I'm 72 years old,5'11",200 lbs. I've never found a hill that I could not easily pedal up using pedal assist. I've logged a little over 1500 miles with no troubles other than a burned out head light that Rad replaced. Regarding trail use rules there is a nice one within a short ride from my house that is restricted to a 20MPH top speed and only class 1 ebikes allowed. While the Rover is a class 2,when I get to the trail entrance I can easily unplug the throttle which converts the bike to Class 1 status and does not affect PAS. When I leave the trail I just plug it back in.

Hello- after extreme comparison shopping I went with Sondors MXS - add that to your list and compare- Rad is a good choice but for a little more you get a real 750 watt /hydraulic brakes/air shock/suspension seat post and a larger battery-

I can vouch for Radpower. They make great bikes and you'd have no issues going up some big hill on them, even at your weight. I live in Washington state so I see them everywhere. I've never met a person who didn't gush about how much they love theirs. Even riders that are much larger (mid 300's) love them.

I'd also take a look at Aventon and Ride1up as budget options. They are both excellent choices. I have a Lectric XP that I love thats in the same class and price range, but I think since you have more of a budget it would make more sense to look at one of the other 3 brands I mentioned.

Have you got an not so old older bike in the garage that you can electrify it with a DIY kit? It's a fun project and you end up with a $1,800 bike for $800.

You aren't marrying the eBike. If after a year you really hate the choice, just sell it and try something else. Very few people select the perfect machine the 1st time. Especially if they buy off the internet!

To build on that comment, which I totally agree with, that first bike is going to teach you a TON. Further, we know buying the first e-bike takes a huge jump of faith. What I'm here to tell you is that the second bike will NOT require that same jump. You'll be much more comfortable making that call, and it's a pretty safe bet round #2 is going to be a nicer bike, not to mention a more expensive one.... When you're hooked, you're hooked! 😄
