Hi all. Orbea gain 2019. Updated with the Orbea ANT+/LEV dongle. Have an Orbea display with which I'm able to adjust the assist level settings. Bought a Garmin edge 840 to improve display but am unable to use it to select the assist level. I can read the assist level (oddly with values of 1,4,7), but I can't figure out how to control the assist level from the display. Has anyone done this?
Thanks.

I am under the impression that the Garmin will only receive data, not send. At least that's the way it seems with my Garmin 530 and Giant Stance E+2

You cannot control the e-bike parameters by Garmin, only read them. Unfortunately, Garmin computers cannot interpret the LEV Travel Mode (the assistance mode name) providing numbers (such as yours 1, 4 and 7) instead. There is a workaround, though.

There is a data field by name Ebike Field by Jan Capek in Garmin Connect IQ Store.

If you read the documentation, you'll find there is a configuration file for Ebike Field. You can edit a data map there, something like:
  • 0 - OFF
  • 1 - ECO
  • 4 - SPORT
  • 7 - TURBO
(The above is only a rough example: the actual format is different and explained in the Ebike Field documentation when you install the Data Field).

I don't own a Garmin now but when I had it, I could do the map file for my e-bike. Also try googling "how to set lev travel mode name garmin Ebike field".

Thanks all. I appreciate the quick response.

The Orbea wireless remote head unit (branded Orbea, not sure who manufactures it) has both a display which shows assist levels as 0,1,2,3 and also provides a two button wireless control of the assist in both directions, i.e. increase and decrease.

I'll just have to use the Iwoc button to change levels, or have both the orbea head unit and the garmin edge head unit mounted. I was hoping for something cleaner.

What they said. ANT+ LEV is read only.

Does the M20 support a remote?
Hi,

This is not correct. I have a 2019 Orbea Gain M20i with the Ant+ dongle (only the 2020 onward have built-in Ant+), and on the ebike screen of my Garmin Edge 830 there is +/- buttons to control the assist level. They work every time with very little or no delay. I can even see the light ring on the control button on the top tube blinking as I change level.

The ebike screen has to be added to the activity profile under Data screens -> Add new -> Ebike statistics (translated from Norwegian, so I don't know if that's exactly what the menu choices are) and you can choose whether it is visible only when ebike is connected.

I was not aware of that, thanks. The thing about ANT+ is that is a platform for development. Just because it's not common doesn't mean it hasn't been done.

I don't know what you mean with "platform for development", I was just referring to the statement that Ant+ Lev is one way, which it is not, and I can't imagine it has ever been, since it is the platform many ebike systems use for handlebar displays with control of the assist. Of coure, I could be wrong, since I haven't followed the early stages of Ant+ ebike development.

I can't imagine any wireless technology that isn't constantly developing.
