not gaining speed on 250w motor even after over volting

Hello im new here and i have a quick question. I work at a bike shop and i pieced together an ebike from some throw away parts we had. Its a 250w hub motor. controller is 36v/48v 1000w- 35A. and the current battery i run is 36v 8.7ah. I currently get a consistent 20mph and i have seen 22mph on it before. So one day i threw on a 48v 17ah battery to test my new top speed and it was only 24mph. My controller can obviously handle it and from what i understand i can push as many wh through the motor as i want but obviously it can cause damage. I feel like i shouldve gotten more like 30mph on that setup. Am i completely motor limited or maybe was i supposed to use the "intelligent identification" wires again with the new battery or is there something else going on?

P.S. im 160 lbs.

"i understand i can push as many wh through the motor" Not an expert, but isn't wh just a measure of capacity? Volts and amps are what you measure at the motor. What gauge wire are you using? Small wire doesn't help. Motor ratings are horrible, but what is the recommended max? My suggestion is you could get more speed with more volts, and bigger wire. But just how long the motor would last would be the next question.
 
Having done the 48V over 36V a few times on dinky motors, I think going from 20 to 24 mph sounds about right. Maybe on a good day you get 25 mph.

I believe its 18 or 20g wire if I remember correctly. Its nothing big I know that. But the motor doesnt seem to be getting warm or anything at all. Its rated for 250w

Wow okay good to know. I really felt like pushing over 700 wh would really put me over 30. Looks like its time to maybe build a motorcycle

Just shoving more volts or amps thru any 250 watt motor is not going to make the speed you necessarily desire. A 250 watt Igh hub has different internal gear ratios and different magnetic characteristics and windings than a 350 watt or 500 watt etc. A 250 watt motor can be designed from the start to help someone acheive as much as 28 mph on an ebike, and EnMotion has one such motor as long as it is on the right type of ebike and the Ebike is also geared properly.

With any motor, increasing voltage can increase speed modestly, but then you can run into issues down the road if the motor wasn't designed for the voltage to begin with.

A lot of it were bikes where the controllers went bad and customers were given new bikes under warranty and neither the customer or manufacterer wanted the parts off of it. So they were taking up room in our shop and I got the green light to snag any parts that i wanted otherwise it was going in the trash. I'm very lucky
