Night Rover ride with Lumos helmet

Hello fellow ebikers!

I recently ordered the Lumos helmet which is a helmet with integrated LED lights. It's a smart helmet with some interesting features.

The led lights are very bright with nicely integrated design. There are multiple blinking speed settings. It also comes with a left and right turn signal wireless remote, which easily mounts on the handlebars. Blinkers activates orange lights on the back as well as the front. I only had about couple of missed signals all night. (I had to press the button one more time) Maybe due to bluetooth connection error.

The Lumos also has a braking light system, but this feature is still in beta phase. The feature simply did not work with the awesome speeds from the rover. Oddly the brake sensor was going off when I accelerated and turned off when I slowed down. Totally the opposite of what it's suppose to do. Another down side is that it only comes in universal size, which does not fit my incredible head. My temples still hurt. I would like to see different sizes and also a higher quality of protection.

The lighting system on the Lumos is fantastic but I have decided to return it due to the size and beta features. I am sure they will improve on those issues.
Livall is another company that makes smart helmets. Give me your opinion if you have tried either of these brands.

The color combo on that led is interesting. Blue red and white lol might work scaring off unwanted attention :)
You can select what colors flash/ sequence. I've been told that it looks like a law enforcement light when you first see it flashing red/blue. That could be good or bad..... At the very least, it is super bright and impossible to ignore.
 
I have been tracking this model as I have had good luck with magic shine lighting in the past. However like the one above it only comes in one shell size and I need a size larger.

Having an active brake light and turn signals is a great idea that's time is coming. After all all other road users have these features and readily understand their meaning. Hand signals not so much :(
 
Turn signals I might agree with. The brake light I feel is a waste of time, but others may not. My feeling is that if someone is so close to you that a brake light is useful, they are WAY too close period.

I agree. Hand signals dont always work and having visible and bright signals definitely provides better visibility for car drivers these days. I just hope they improve on their brake light and also the sizing issue. What do you think of the magic shine other than the size issue? Does it have a brake light feature?
 
Yes, basically all it is is a decelerometer. The harder you brake the brighter it gets. I have their taillight with that feature. I never see it work but am told it does.
 
I don't ride at night but still got this light. Just in case I ever do I guess. Has the break light option as well as turn signals.

I use the lights anyway even during the day at times. It is cheap enough that it is good to have even as a steady blinking light.

$200 is a lot for a helmet. I paid half that and think I over did it. They only last so long. One wreck and if you hit the helmet you are supposed to replace it. One use only from what I understand.

You are paying at least double for the lights. I just think it is smarter to have separation between the lights and helmet, I would rather put lights ON the helmet that you could use again on another.

My thinking is that helmet is an extremely small $$$ investment if it means preventing an accident from a distracted driver. How much would it cost you if one distracted driver ran into you or ran you off the road? I see more folks bike work commuting before sunrise with tiny front/rear bike lights (also not wearing reflective bike gear or helmets). They get lost in all the background lights and don't become visible until you are right on top of them.
Not sure they don't offer bike paint with 100% reflective colors for added safety at night.
 
To be clear I was not saying that it was stupid to buy one, to each his own obviously.

(For the record I rarely ever buy Starbucks)

I am not putting a price on safety at all. If it makes you feel safer go for it. Put lights all over everything, helmet, bike, body, tires, whatever.

Since a nice helmet can be had for $50 to $100 it makes more sense to me to put lights on an existing helmet rather than have them built in like that and pay double or more. You get the same results in the end right? So the safety factor is still there.

Helmets only last so long especially if you wear them everyday. If I commuted I would rather take that extra $100 to $150 and buy some nice reusable lights that I could put on my helmet and have nice lights all over the bike as well.

Just a difference of opinion on how to approach the same result in the end. i:)i

I did the battery operated lights on my bike and helmet. I have 6 lights in the 1800 lm to 3600 lm range and wanted to have the flexibility to use them between 1-6 bikes/helmets between my family. I also have head straps for hiking or camping at night. I like these types of lights for their flexibility with other outdoor activities and any part can be replaced separately pretty cheap on eBay (light, battery, straps, charger, mounts, extension cords).

The only time I wished I had a integrated helmet light was when I was trail riding and didn't duck low enough and my light hit a branch (I'm a few inches under 7 feet tall with my helmet/light sitting on the Radrover). It gave me a slight whiplash that caused the back of my neck to ached for about a week. Might have to mount my light on the side of my helmet if I do that again.
 
I also have a Lumos helmet and have been very pleased with it so far. It may be a small thing but any thing I can do to improve visibility while riding is with the investment. The signals are great even though some days when riding to work I would prefer a fog horn.
