NH ebike trail ban bill.

Wow they set the speed limit at which e-bike would be classified as a motor vehicle at 15 mph. At least they could set it in accordance with the current e-bike classifications and say 20 miles an hour or above

good ol' republicans, turning some formerly free state "red" in a bad way( thought we fought dictators?)people please vote libertarian next go around( unless the shoe in is a complete disaster) guess they are finding another revenue stream.

The bad thing about this rule is it only targets ebikes that can travel +15 mph. The weekend "tour de France" type speed pedal biker are usually between 17-22 mph (sometimes in wolf-packs) on the same bike trails and roadways without any restrictions. It would make sense if this law was for anything on wheels that can exceed the speed of 15 mph are subject to this law/regulation. Why is an unregulated pedal bike at 15-20 mph "safer" for the public compared to an ebike at 15-20 mph?

Sounds like "bike purist" taking offense to electric bikes infringing on their rights to pedal and not getting passed on a steep hill by an older or plus size rider (I'm almost 60 years old, +/- 300lbs, plantar fasciitis/knee aches, and put over 8000 miles in the last 5 years on my ebikes).

I was planning on riding the New Hampshire Northern Trail again this year. I guess I'll ride elsewhere.

Whatever happened to "Live Free or Die"

I would have thought americans had more to worry about ROFL

LOL perhaps they should ban guns that kill humans rather than bikes

More than 40,000 people killed in gun violence so far in 2023

I'm sure there are some in this country that would say if e-biked where equipped with a gun, then every person in the country would be allowed to have one and ride it through Walmart if they wanted to

There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the literature and orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now. ... What do you mean you’ve never been to Alpha Centauri? Oh, for heaven’s sake, mankind, it’s only four light years away, you know. I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that’s your own lookout.

It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.

Perception is reality. When people see riders blowing close by unannounced or in other rude fashion past them on ebikes at high speed without pedaling then they can lump ebikes as a whole through that lens and look for ways to limit the impact. I've seen many ebikes ridden in that fashion on paths and find it sort of repulsive myself. It's as if they are riding motor scooters (which they are in fact doing) on a path meant for walking, running, cycling or even horseback, not a motorized conveyance other than mobility scooters. While it is reported by others on this site I've can't recall having seen "analog" bikes ridden in this way on paths by lycra riders. Instead they are usually on roads even when a path is available nearby and they seem to prefer to limit their mayhem, if any, to those roads. I can imagine at some point lawmakers will just throw their hands up and enact regulations to ban ebikes entirely from multiuse paths. That'd be unfortunate but not entirely unwarranted.

very, very, very few experienced “analog” riders ride this way. having to build the momentum yourself and ride for months if not years to reach the level of fitness required for sustained high speeds results in completely different behavior than literally anyone being able to go 20mph uphill.

the “reports” of that behavior are primarily from people who simply dislike or are jealous of anyone in a different tribe than they, or severe confirmation bias.

If you were capable of... You wouldn't need all the big/bold text of a 12 year old.
News flash for the you... 2023 is so far.. over

Really?
Look in the mirror on the bias.
I see it just as often as ebike offensive riders.

You don't need to wear seatbelts, you don't need a helmet on a motorcycle, but you can't be trusted to use an ebike on a rail trail! Some of which allow skidoos in the winter, and ATVs in the summer. NH is off it's rocker. My favorite trails may be gone in July before they even finish them. 🙁. This is sad, hopefully people in NH tell them where they can stick this.

So no one from Massachusetts or other neighboring states will be able to cross the border on their ebike. I don't see MA residents register their bikes as Motor vehicles in NH. They must be upset that they are electric. Too many trump-babies and karens in NH it seems.

yes, really. i rarely see anyone riding like a dick - tens of thousands of miles of riding - but when i do, it’s someone on an e-bike on a trail/MUP/bike lane. maybe the west coast is different, but same thing when i rode in new york city. ridiculous number of scrambler e-bike delivery people literally going the wrong direction in the bike lane.

it’s physics. when you build the momentum yourself, all the stops and starts caused by other people on a shared path are WAY more troublesome than throttling back up on an e-bike. so you ride on the road, to not waste all that energy. let alone the fact that 90% of the population of the united states probably isn’t even capable of riding a bicycle at a steady 20mph for more than a few minutes, let alone up a hill.

there’s a reason nearly nobody cared about how fast bikes go before e-bikes. for decades. because they didn’t go very fast and when they did it was on roads with cars going twice as fast.

The problematic riders in my town are definitely on e-bikes. They go too fast and too close to other people, and kick up a ton of dust on our trails. It’s just a lack of experience. Every time I see it I cringe knowing that pedestrians are clearly annoyed.

Almost got nailed last month by someone riding a city e-bike 15 mph+ on the sidewalk. He had no clue how to ride, but he was going fast. I was standing with a friend and he missed me by an inch or two. Sidewalk riding is necessary and legal in my town, but you have to exercise caution.

Anyhow, none of these guys comes close to threatening lives like cars do every day. It’s more of a minor annoyance, and a concern that cities will crack down on all cyclists because of the actions of a few.
