I'm trying to get my head around the reasons behind e-bikes being banned on some trails and not others. I'll be honest there is no e-bike banning that i am aware of in NZ. It appears mainly to be a US thing?
Anyway what are that actual reasons?
Here is what i can come up with.
- The possibility of fire. This could be of significant risk/concern to a forestry owner. One e-bike battery failure could burn down 20 years of income.
- out of date legislation banning Motorized vehicles in that particular park and an e-bike is considered a motorised vehicle
- Litigious reasons.. A motorised thing hits a not motorised thing and the big dick swinging lawyers are engaged (the would be a "only in the us" thing).
- Trail wear. I call BS on this. In the fact that trails are there to be used and will wear, E bikes provide more usedbut don't rip the trail up noticeably more than a standard bike.
- Additional uphill speed. I call BS on this too. The differential in uphill speed that e-bike can do is less than the differential in speed between a good and bad descender. So increased up speed is also moot.
Actually that's, it that's all I cam come up with.
So the only actual reason i can fathom for banning e-bikes is risk of fire in a forest and maybe out of date legislation Anything else is just pseudo bullshit reasons.
