New Bosch Gen 4 motor soft wear update

I can confirm that there is NO UPDATE for the HS models in Europe. Riese and Muller told me today:

Dear Mr Johnson,

Thank you for choosing Riese & Müller.

Your dealer is right. For HS models, which have been produced for the European market, this software update cannot be done, we are afraid.

If you need further assistance please let us know.

Kind regards
Your Riese & Müller team

I had a follow up email from R&M

"The update for HS-models cannot be done because of the regulations. It means if you have had a non-HS model, the update may have been done."

That stinks, sorry Squaxor. Maybe you should plan a bike tour to the states and swing by a Bosch dealer when you are here. ;)

Let me know, I'll ride with you!

My SD is being built this week. I hope they upgrade mine at the factory. We'll see.

Oh yeah, don't feel too bad...we have our own fair amount of dumb regulations...we can have have torqued up Bocsh motors...but not Kinder Eggs!

I got my Allant+ 9.9s updated on Tuesday. The motor is marginally more lively. Range is diminished slightly but can be improved with a reduction in assist one step down and application of more muscle power. It is easier to sustain speed in the mid 20s. It took 10-15 minutes...no charge.

My feeling is that R&M will continue to treat the UK line mainland Europe. It will add complexity to their supply chain otherwise. The UK might eventually change the regulations, but working in government myself I can tell you nothing happens very quickly.

Ok, found a Trek dealer who is doing the update. Got there and asked specifically about lights on/off and EMTB vs Sport mode and he initially said that neither was available to the Allant+7. He connected the system and started looking around. He started mumbling (I think) about crank and he then looked at the markings on the crank arms and mentioned 170. Back at the computer he looked at a list of options and saw several including what he said was the EMTB option. He selected it and several other things and the the status bar started churning. When it was done he disconnected the cable , turned the Purion off then back on again. He pushed the + button for a couple of seconds and the light went off. Pushed it again for a few seconds and the light went back on!
THEN he pushed the + button quickly and went thru the assist levels to ECO-TOURING-EMTB(!)-TURBO!!
Damn I have EMTB mode in my Allant! He told me to go outside and test it and that the harder I pedaled, the more assist it would give. I can’t tell if it was just the added torque or the EMTB mode but I liked it!

Hi

Can you tell if this update implements the eMTB mode instead of the sport one ? My supercharger 2 has been delivered to me with the sport mode only. Is it something that is (or can be) locked by the bike manufacturer ?

Best regards

It is a choice on some motor/bike combinations.
Search update for more info.

First, I specifically asked to have EMTB mode installed. I was initially told by every Trek shop I called that knew anything about the update that Trek could potentially lock that out. Even the guy who did the update said he probably would not be able to make that conversion. Clearly it was the first time he’d had a specific request to do that or even make it so the lights turn on/off. The fact that my Allant+7 has the PLCX AND the 170mm crank were evidently key to having the option in the software to make the change.
I’m actually kind of blown away at the response to just slightly pushing on the pedals. Even my son-in-law mtb’er was shocked at the change.

Hi,

Just for some "statistics" purpose, can you report here which hardware version of the Performance Cx 2020 engine you have, as reported by the bike computer (Kiox, ...). In my case it is 0.0.6.0 (supercharger 2 GT Rohloff, delivery january 2020).

Don’t know where exactly to find that number.

I bought a new 7s an hour ago ' left the manual, the charger In the box at the dealer! They aren’t open til Monday. 1st question is How can I tell if I am up To date with the update? Is there a version in the display I can find? If so how? I don’t even know how to see mileage yet...any other hints? Oops wrong place sorry

Had my Delite 2020 updated and noticed the extra torque significantly.

The shop also accidentally reverted my motor back to Sport from eMTB mode and so far hill climbing is much better, on me at least - much less effort needed. Will look to do some singletrack hopefully this weekend to see how sport behaves under changing conditions - eMTB works well in this situation and the new flash upgrade adds more functionality for eMTB gliding through trail ruts with extra power assistance when the pedals are in a horizontal position.

Question on the eMTB mode. My dealer did not want to install the eMTYB mode on my SuperDelight Touring with gen4 CX motor as it would ruin the chain to fast or something like that. Is that true?
Further I saw that a Tour+ mode would come this summer. From bosch-ebike.com: "The new Tour+ riding mode for the Performance Line CX with derailleur system (from model year 2020) and eMTB mode will be available from summer 2021."
Would that mean that Tour+ and eMTB will now be available for bikes with derailleur systems?

Here is my original chain (new last May) with the Park measuring tool last week. I’ve had EMTB mode installed in my Allant+7 since early last summer and barely showing any wear of consequence with over 1750+ miles. I actually think there is less chain wear in my case because I believe I’m shifting less with EMTB mode installed. That said, YMMV depending on how you pedal, your chain maintenance, etc.
