Shimano is conservative though.

Many people use wide range cassettes with success on Alivio's. Now I don't know if the REI bike comes with long cage version, here is one member from here who switched to 11-46 on his Alivio 9 speed long cage(Shimano rates this for 36T max too).

He did use a derailleur extension like I did with a SRAM (both the SRAM and the 105 are long cages) but neither could handle anything over 32t. The extension works fine but not anything that I would want to have to do with a new bike though.

my 2cent is fork out a few extra bucks and go with the Yamaha, if your going to climb hills i just feel like a middrive is the way to go,that or a very powerful hub drive, keep in mind that Rad Mini you tried had those small 20inch tires that really increase climbing power, other fullsize hubmotor bikes with similar specs may not climb so well.
