Mid Drive shifting under throttle only

I've spent a solid hour on google trying to get a flat out answer to this question.

If I'm riding a mid drive bike under throttle only can I shift up and down without having to pedal? Bike is equipped with a shift sensor.

Yes you can. The prerequisite for shifting is that the chain is moving. Since the motor is driving the chain, the derailleur can shift.

well you can but it is really hard on the drivetrain. a mid drive will be spinning the pedals. and only Bosch has shift detection but no throttle.

I don't think it's as common on emtb but just about any manufacturers using bafang mid drives have throttles and more recently have mechanical shift sensors

you sure? I think they ahve the patent on it. I many be mistaken though. but you still want to ease up on the peddling when shifting for the best shifting.

I was reading last night that Bosch uses software in their programming for dialing back motor current while shifting. Bikes are now coming with a physical sensor that runs from your shifter to the motor and momentarily cuts motor power.

Yeah I figured that would be best. Not only that but with a right side mounted thumb throttle and a right side mounted 7 speed grip shifter I assume it will be difficult to stay in the throttle and shift. I just wanted to know if I was going to have to start pedaling after I let up on the throttle to make a shift happen.

you can get away with a gear or two while not peddling.

I never understood the need for shift sensing.

Can't you just lighten up on the pedals when shifting? Like you normally do on an analogue bike anyway?

Seems this shift sensing is only useful for somebody who is new to riding bikes. But what do i know.

with mid drives it just helps with drive train wear.

Probably not the original intention but has the added benefit of making mid drives available to more people. I just ordered one. I was on the fence for a while between hub and mid because I didn't want a mistake to cost me a chain and being stranded. Maybe not as big a deal on a 250w mid but a bafang pumping out 1500 can do some damage.

I was on the fence for a while between hub and mid because I didn't want a mistake to cost me a chain and being stranded. Maybe not as big a deal on a 250w mid but a bafang pumping out 1500 can do some damage.

no I got about 100 miles on my first chain but after getting then and of the things I got 2500 miles on the net one.

A few sets of quicklinks, a quality chain breaking tool, and a small spare length of chain are some things I never leave home without.

That being said, I have yet to break a chain.

on the big Bafang motors its a must, they are pushing 160nm of torque and will grind away your drivetrain without a detector,letting off the pedals helps but those motors need a shiftdetector.

if its a Bafang motor with the physical shift detector yeah you can shift no worries at all, its going to completely stall the motor every time you shift,just dont shift when your barely rolling.

I have a bafang middrive with shift sensing. I have been riding it for about a year and I still appreciate the shift sensing.
I'm use to it and I use it to time the pedaling.

I have another middrive without sensing and every so often you are in a situation when its tough to lighten up.
I still get that pucker factor when you hear your cassette getting the sh** beat out of it!
