I’ve been doing research for about three weeks now on a electric mountain bike I really like the Luna X-1 Enduro. Can anyone give me feedback on this bike and the Luna Company? I’ve read great....and poor reviews online.
for me, this bike it’s the right price point, the power I would like to have, seems to be a very good build and has a throttle assist which will help me out in times of need as I just had pretty extensive knee surgery in September. Looking for a bike that will get me to the trail head from my house in San Diego quickly and with not much effort and then be able to handle all the great trails we have around us. Thanks in advance for your time.

From a customer perspective I've found Luna to be an efficient and practical supplier. I bought a 36v battery pack from Luna in fall 2016 I am still using with the cheap 2a charger they originally supplied, the extra $100 "Advanced" charger I bought from them at the same time was a different story failing within weeks and Luna would not exchange or repair it so I suggest you pay for the extra warranty if you're thinking of getting one of their ebikes. About the same time I had to do a return on a 48v battery and they were efficient and accepted the return, I paid for the return hazmat shipping. They have stopped selling the 36v Sondors upgrade battery pack I bought, the owner has always been more into the high-power market, and there are alternative suppliers. Last year I bought a Luna chainring and spider that was well-priced and works well with my BBS01.

Just another over rated source. Batteries are cheap China builds except for the few potted packs. Customer service an warranty service are the pits.

Luna is fine. How long a ride to the trailhead? You may want a bigger chain ring to go faster.

It’s about 2 miles with a 1/2 mile climb. Not too bad. My low end Ecotric hub motor fat tire got me there, ride on trail and back home with no issues. Until motor started making a loud noise and I realized a $900 bike is fine for somethings but not the riding I’d like to progress to.

Looks like they dropped price to $3450. That's a good deal, as low as it's ever been. Too bad they don't have matte black in stock. Looks way better than the glossy black or red.

Did you see this thread?

Luna didn't take me. Fedex did. They quoted around $200 to return the bike which seemed reasonable since they would do all the packing (which was required for insurance). I took it in for them to package up, and even without the front wheel removed they couldn't fit it in their bike box. We had to remove the rear wheel and put both wheels in another box. Was a total cluster, and I was shocked when the final bill turned out to be ~$350, but at that point I was done with it and didn't have the patience to have them unbox and put it back in my car to take somewhere else.

Luna actually offered to cover my return shipping after the fact but I didn't feel they should have to pay for my choice of expensive return shipping since they were reimbursing the original shipping. It should have cost less than $200.

I would have kept the X1 if they had the quieter gear back then. I ended up ordering a Frey CC which I think will be a better fit for my needs. The X1 isn't really geared for city use. You can swap out the chain riing if you want to go faster. The Frey was about the same money and something I could also let my wife ride since it's more of a step thru.

What are some reasons you feel it’s not for me? I’ve been all over there site, FB page and their forum. Just would like to know what red flags I should look for etc.

Thats impressive that they offered to cover shipping after the fact. Some people they can't get a hold of anyone there and customer service gets mixed reviews. Some say they are excellent to work with and some say they are terrible. Since I'm buying this bike blind (besides the great feedback from you and others on this forum) I hope they have some great support as I don't want to be stuck with dead battery or a lemon.

Yes total bummer. But at this point I'm dying for a high end Mountain bike since my Santa Cruz was stolen in September and it seems biking is my only outlet since surfing has been shut down in San Diego since the Stay at Home Order. Matte black may not be in until summer

Wow! They did just drop the price from what I saw yesterday by $250. Omen.

Luna often does offer compelling configurations for the price. But, make sure you understand what you're actually getting.

They don't say what the front chainring size is - the photos show a smallish front chainring, which is great for off-road hills, but not for 30MPH on road. I'd try to get on a chat and ask them about that since what's actually on the bike now may be different. You're limited by the frame as to how big a front chainring will fit on this bike. It's not a commuter bike, and to be fair, it's not sold that way.

You can see the description hasn't been updated properly - it says only black, yet lists red above. It also still talks about "pre-order" pricing and that the price will go over $4k, which never happened. Some of that is because they've apparently negotiated a deal with SRAM.

It's nice that they're finally putting wide enough rims (40mm) on their Boost bikes, but don't expect high quality wheels at this price point. I actually upgraded my Apollo to an e*thirteen wheelset from SteepAndCheep (2018 model at more than half-off) that's better than what they've shipped on the more expensive Apollo. The handlebars and stem will be no-name alloy, but that's usually the right price trade-off.

The drivetrain is SRAM's SX Eagle. That's the lowest end 12-speed Eagle. It's on a standard rear hub, which supports an 11-50 rear tooth range. It's probably fine, and since the whole SRAM Eagle line is compatible up and down the levels, so you can upgrade individual pieces as desired without getting a whole new drivetrain. For instance, when your chain wears out, spend the extra bucks ($60) for the X01 Eagle chain. Think about going to a GX derailleur eventually.

They list the brakes as "GUIDE." That's SRAM Guide R. Not bad for the price - they're even 4-pistons each. But, they're not high-end Maguras and they use DOT brake fluid which makes flushing a pain.

As with most online retailers, you'll need to be handy or find an LBS willing to work on the bike for you. Luna does ship with a not-terrible toolkit in a plastic case with the bike, too.
