Lumos Ultra

Coming soon, apparently.

Soon is not defined.

Tighter LED strip and a different type of LED. So, brighter.

Flashing is available.

Low price ($99) seems to be imperative.

No mention of MIPS.

Indeed. MIPS was buried behind all the more flashy (!) new features. But it does get mentioned in the latest promos. In the early bird pricing, MIPS kicks the price from $75 to $99.

Those were the Super Early Bird pricing, which are no longer available. The currently offered early bird pricing is $79/$109, which isn't all that much.

I've backed a MIPS Ultra, though I'm not sure I need another helmet as I've got both their Kickstart and MIPS Matrix.

I'm interested in the Lumos Ultra... has anyone received their helmet yet?

From the last backer update email I received:
Here is our updated best estimate timeline of when shipping and delivery will happen (for M/L size both MIPS and non-MIPS models):

End Nov - First batch of helmets fully assembled
Mid-late Dec - First deliveries start arriving on doorstep
Jan - Majority of M/L helmets delivered
For S & XL Ultra helmets - Delivery will be an additional 3 months on top of this timeline.

We’re headed into the last two weeks of January. If anyone’s received theirs yet, I haven’t heard about it.

Mine randomly showed up last week via DHL direct from Asia.

First impression is good, but between work stuff and a kitchen remodel I'm in the middle of it'll probably be another week before I take it out on the road.

Congratulations... can you post a few photos of the lights in action when you have time?

waiting on ours. I wonder if you can connect two remotes to one helmet and or two helmets with one remote. on our tandem I want to control both helmets and on my bike just one separate remote.

Can you share when you ordered yours? Curious, as a previous beta tester for the 1st gen helmet, may wife and I jumped at the 1st opportunity to get "on the list" for the Ultra, which has yet to show up.
Just trying to see if it will be random or organized. (distrubition)

I ordered on 5/26. I would guess the color/options/accessories are dictating the fulfillment order more than the when someone first backed the kickstarter project.

@fooferdoggie . Based on some quick tests, I doubt you'll be able to do that. I tried to pair the helmet with the enhanced remote and the basic remote at the same time, but the helmet seems to lock onto the last pairing signal it sees and that's it.

ya I was thinking that. but maybe two helmets with the same remote may work.

Quick update here with some first impressions from using the Ultra on today's commute.

Those who are backers should have received an update discussing the fit issue that led to Lumos temporarily stopping production of the M/L MIPS versions in mid December. Mine seems to have been one of the early ones that went out before they identified the issue.

i can confirm that I find the fit to be poor and not comfortable, so I guess I'm among the 20-30% whose head doesn't work well with the initial design. For me that means a lot of uncomfortable pressure on my forehead and yet the helmet still feels loose laterally. Disappointing, but it appears Lumos is trying to do the right thing and hopefully the updated MIPS layer addresses the issue.

Other thoughts:
  • the remote was dead when I got it out this morning. I charged it fully Monday night, and it only saw 15-20 min usage Monday and Tuesday just pairing and testing the helmet's modes. I'll need to watch more closely but it makes me worry about its standby life.
  • the Ultra went from 85 to 36% battery on my ride home. That's approx 45 minutes of solid on mode.
  • the app is pretty nice. You can customize both the front and rear lights however you want and it shows the battery level for the helmet and remote in the app.
  • Why on earth does Lumos think anyone would want to use the Lumos helmet app to track their ride? And log in with Facebook to do it? No thanks.
  • The front light is fine, but the LED quality is not great - it has the greenish hue that a lot of cheap lights have.
  • the helmet looks nice and it's a pretty slick design
  • The rear lights are bright and I've been told are very visible from behind. Very well implemented.
  • The turn signals have audible cues -nice.
  • I guess it's cool that you can activate the turn signals with an Apple watch. As a left handed Android user, I'll never know.
All in all it's a lot of functionality in a relatively slick yet simple helmet for the price. I really hope they've truly solved the fit issue.

Thanks for posting the detailed review... I'm sure they will sort out the fit issues. 😉
Can you post a few photos of the lights in action when you have time available? Thanks!

Well, ... a change in the fit would seem to be non-trivial. The kind of thing that could push January into July. 😔

Lumos Ultra Kickstarter update 2/20/21:

The updated estimated timeline is as follows:

Feb/Mar - All non-MIPS M/L helmets delivered
Apr - Updated MIPS M/L helmets start to get delivered
May/Jun - All updated MIPS M/L helmets delivered
July - All S and XL helmets delivered

As someone who ordered an XL MIPS early bird, I will be surprised if I see my helmet before autumn. But I’ll be ready for the 2022 riding season, anyway.

Looks like maybe Lumos bit off more than they could chew with the Ultra.
