Looking for a workout mountain e-bike that allows you to quickly disable all assistance as needed (without turning it off off) Zero gear below Eco.

I never got around to attempting this DIY projects and it's been a year now.

To be honest I haven't been riding my hyperfat bike at all. I thought I wanted the power of this bike but when I'm working out I don't want any assistance at all at certain points. Without the ability to totally turn off all assistance as needed, it's not a good bike to get any kind of workout on at all. It helps out too much even on the lost setting with as much disabled as possible. I might as well buy an off-road motorcycle etc is how it feels.

Has juiced added the feature to turn off ALL assistance in any of their newer products? (A Zero gear below Eco would be perfect)

If not, what another brand electric bike I can look into that offers complete shut-off? I might as well get something a bit lighter than as well.

Hell, I'd settle for throttle only even at this point if that's what I need. I really need a mountain bike I can get a work out with but power through extra steep hills via electric when it's needed since I'm around the Lake Tahoe mountains.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

I'll post the key parts from the original thread I linked to above:

Anyway to Disable Automatic Assistance for special occasions? (HyperFat e-bike) Sometimes I want to focus on intense exercising some days and the assistance is just way too much at any setting. It would be nice if we could have the option to disable ALL automatic assistance but the manual throttle still works on demand in a pinch.

I can press and hold the power button to turn it off, but then I can't use the throttle anymore either.

I've disabled the Torque sensor

I've set to ECO

I've set the speed limit to 1, 5, 10, doesn't matter though. My Speed Limit setting isn't obeyed less than 14 MPH. (too much assistance)

No matter what I choose, when I peddle or hold the throttle the bike will get right up to 14 mph. Again this is too much help when I'm ready to actually get a workout in.

Suggestions/Thoughts? Is this a firmware feature request maybe?

We should have 6 modes

OFF or "0", ECO, 1, 2, 3, SPORT
(OFF or "0" = Throttle only, no automatic assistance) Not system OFF off but just temp all assistance off off on the fly on demand as needed

Interesting not being able to turn off the assistance. My bike has both "0" (no PAS, no throttle) and "6" (no PAS, throttle only), so easy not to be assisted if one wants no assistance.

Mountain bike?
What bike do you have? I’m ready to buy a new bike for working out that does just that.

It’s a commuter, cruiser style... But the same brand also makes a hub drive mountain bike that has the same features. I think it is called the trail tracker.

Bosch powered Haibikes have a no assist option. At least my eMTB 2016 XDURO Full Seven S RX, and my 2016 XDURO Trekking S RX do.

Bosch mid-drives have the reputation of dragging like an anchor with the assist off.
I ride unpowered 95% of the time for heart health, using my throttle only when wind is over 13 mph in my face or trips over 25 miles. Geared hubs don't drag, also shimano mid-drives, Yamaha mid-drives, and b-somethng else I forget. DD hub drives drag some, about 2 sprockets down IMHO if one is age 68 like me.
You should be able to put a new controller on your juiced hub drive that has PAS 0, ie assistance off. My ebikeling.com kit operated that way, nothing at PAS0 or 11 mph minimum at PAS1. Check your connectors on the motor versus the ones on the controller from ebikeling. You'll need a new display too, probably new PAS sensor, brake switches, throttle. Depends on if the connectors will match up. Probably be cheaper to buy a whole power wheel kit with all the accessories matching. Then you can just change the wheel and electrics.
I found ebikeling PAS1 dangerous at stops. If I push the pedal backwards to line up for takeoff, the bike takes off forwards even though cars are coming. I'd have to push PAS button down every stopsign, then push OAS button up after I got up to where 11 mph was safe to ride. The ebikeling buttons were out on the left side handlebar, not on the display

How would I go about retrofitting my Juiced hyperfat controller too add the “0” no assist mode? That sounds like a lot of work just to get a simple feature juiced should offer on all their controllers. Let me ask if they have this feature yet since it’s been a year.

If I can’t modify I’ll check out Haibikes and Pedego

What about Rad ?

Hey Jon,

Thanks for reaching out! With our bikes, we do offer 5 levels of pedal assist, along with a "6th" which is the level 0 you are talking about where the bike is on but no pedal assist is offered.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions!

Best,

Giant has the Off function so the odometer works but nothing else. Does not have the drag issue that Bosch does. I find I do a great amount of my riding now with the system off, since you just don’t need it on flats or with any kind of tailwind. My range numbers are terrific as well because of it.

The other Yamaha based brands - like Yamaha, perhaps - may also have this setup.

My wife just got the Raleigh retroglide royal and the Bosch system doesn't drag at all in 0 assist.

I know this is an old comment, but I have not found this to be true. I have the Priority Embark with the Bosch Active Plus mid-drive, and I typically ride it with the assist off unless I'm going uphill. I mean, yeah, the bike weighs 45 pounds so it's not like I'm riding my acoustic bike, but I don't perceive drag.
