If you looked at the ST1 and the ST2, how did you decide?

What were the deciding factors? My local shop said he thought the ST1 offered more bang for the buck. Thanks!

have 1 of each (wife) st2 power wins , comfort of st1, more "fun" st1, always goes back to 1st point though...money aside but just save more for ST2...have an eye on st1 x 48 volt!

I have both an ST1 Elite (upgraded to triple chainring) and an ST2s. After riding the ST2s and then going back to the ST1, I notice that the ST2s definitely has better poise and handling, with slightly less weight and a tad more power (especially above 20mph) and of course incredible range (with the hilly country I ride in, I'm getting an additional 30-40 miles over the ST1, which has the large batter capacity).

However, that being said, my ST1 Elite has Big Ben Schwalbe tires, whereas the ST2s has Continental Top Contact tires and they definitely make a difference to rolling resistance and shock absorption. So much so, that I ended up getting a Cirrus Body Float seat post for the ST2s, because the Continental tires don't absorb the jolts the same way as the Schwalbes. FYI, my ST1 has a Cane Creek Thudbuster which has worked really well for the last 1900 miles. I'm getting ready to sell the ST1 Elite, but still really enjoy riding it, so haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Very helpful to read the opinions from people who have spent time on both bikes. I have the ST1X fairly high on my list of bikes I am considering. I figured for a 30 -34 mile daily commute I can sacrifice range to gain with a lighter bike. But on the other hand I had recently knocked the Stromers in general down on my list due to the number of threads I found in this forum relating to buggy electronics. Any differences noted between the ST1 and ST2s in terms of reliability of the electronics or motors? Is it reasonable to assume continuous product improvement might make the 2017s (St1X) more reliable?

YMMV, but so far my ST1 Elite has been incredibly reliable and ST2s is doing well also. However, our climate is very temperate most of the time in northern Oregon, so my bikes don't get heat stressed too often.

If money doesn't count: Take the ST2s. It's the best of all.
If you need some reasoning:
  • Your circuit is almost flat or only smooth hills, rarely has stopps and re-acceleration: Take the ST1 - he's the fastest.
  • Your course has hills and / or several breaking points followed by re-acceleration: Take the ST2 - he's the strongest

I rode a Stromer ST-1 Limited Edition for 300 miles on a 60 day trial period, then decided to upgrade to the ST-2. While it was fresh in my mind at the time I upgraded, I tried to make a list comparing the two. To wit:

STROMER ST - 2 compared to ST - 1 Platinum

1) USB outlet, and daytime driving light in head tube
2) upgraded Magura disc brake set
3) upgraded Shimano drive train with 20 speeds and 34 tooth rear cog (vs 30 speed triple
with 32 tooth rear cog and lesser Shimano shift components)
4) handier power switch, lighted with upgraded headlight/taillight and light switch built in
5) control panel integrated into top tube with touch screen menu driven cycling parameters
6) ability to “lock” bike thru this panel with corresponding GPS surveillance for locating the bike,
including text alert via Omni app for Stromer
7) Stromer Omni app for phone, that allows for adjusting the cycling parameters from phone as well
as lock or unlock the bike
8) thru axel on rear removable with 6 mm hex key (as opposed to bolted on axel on ST-1)
9) easier removal of rear wheel (no need to cut zip ties and replace if needing to pull the rear wheel)
10) syno-drive motor (500W, 4 lbs. lighter and nearly 20% more torque)
11) battery is much larger and more powerful 48V, 814WH with extended range up to 90 miles)
12) charger has magnetic energy bus coupling (so extra adapter for ST-1 type charger is eliminated)
13 battery is easier to put back in down tube (no rails)
14 battery compartment access is improved (turn key and door pops open vs having to push an
additional button after turning the key on the ST -1). In addition battery has folding handle for
easier handling when removing or reinstalling the battery)
15) comes with “city” kit (fenders and lights) ($475 additional on ST - 1 Platinum)
16) 5 levels of regen vs 2 levels on ST-1. Provides a larger variety of regen modes for using the
motor to seriously brake the bike on downhills; easily switched between using the plus and minus
buttons on the controller

price difference $2516 with city kit added to ST -1

If you're able to wait until next bike season:
  • Consider the ST1x as option (instead a ST2). I've no experience on a ST1x, Ravi seems to be the sole guy ever ridden a ST1x. But I strongly suggest: Ask your dealer for a carbon fork during your price negotiations.

Came down to
1)$
2) either will get you there in the same amount of time give or take.
3) if it were my main transportation mode, I could justify (maybe) the extra value in the feature set.
Since its more for errands and recreation - the ST1 was it.
4) after trying 6 different other branded ebikes, then trying the Stromer, the experience was so much better -
I wouldnt have been satisfied with the other brands. Didnt try the ST2 just in case it was that much better than the ST1.
GOTO:1
