I need help

First off let me say I really enjoy the detail and effort electricbikereview.com puts into their reviews. You do an outstanding job!

Now let me get to my question(s). I have been reading several articles and watching videos on ebikes over the last month. And I really want to pull the trigger, but just can't find the right one. Here's my problem; I can only spend around 3k and I have a criteria that I want to meet. First, I'm only interested in a bike that will do 28mph with peddle assist. Second, I want a bike that I can do light off roading/moutain biking with my family, so, I'm looking for one with at least a front shock, as well as a decent commuter bike (10 miles to work). Third, I'm not crazy about the battery being located on the back of the bike as I read a lot of unsatisfactorycomments with the center of gravity when it's placed there. Lastly, I would like to keep it as inexpensive as possible.

I've looked at Focus (too spendy), Prodecotech Outlaw (not great reviews), Haibike (like them but spendy), as well as a few others that meet my budget, but don't meet my criteria..

Thoughts??? I'm not opposed to a gently quality used bike either.

@miah I think there's a basic conflict in your criteria. (I say that because initially my criteria were quite similar to yours). The broader the demand you want to place on the bike, the more difficult you make it for a given bike to meet all of them satisfactorily. And in general terms, also the more expensive it becomes. Asking a bike to sustain 28 mph is almost requiring the bike to run on 48mm, road or hybrid type tires...and how are they going to accommodate mountain biking much beyond relatively flat, maintained trails? At the same time, the more you want a bike to accommodate the rocks, roots and potholes of an off-road trail, the more you require it to be full suspension...and that adds cost which in no way contributes to the bike being able to sustain pedelec speeds.

I see two alternatives for you, given all your requirements: Buy an inexpensive speed pedelec such as the CrossCurrent from Juiced and apply the balance of your budget to an economy priced non-ebike mountain bike. Or purchase a relatively minimal mountain ebike - there are a few being offered by importer/distributors that you'll find here - and buy an even less expensive road non-ebike. Thanks for your input, Jack! The mountain biking I'm referring to is very much relativity flat and maintained. So, I think it would be okay.
I did run across a Leisger MD5 that fits the criteria well. Do you or anyone reading this have any experience with the Leisger? I know they're new to the US so it's not likely, but thought I'd ask.
