Hub Motor Recommendations

Direct drive or gear driven? Voltage planned on?

why direct drive?
It's for an enclosed, recumbent tadpole trike project and I'm thinking about a drive that would allow reversing direction.
So the two common options would be a DD hub or a left side drive mid-motor without freewheeling.
Another option I suppose could be the Grin Technologies GMAC hub.

Here, Grin All Axle would be great for trikes.
The Grin All Axle is only appropriate for the front wheels of a tadpole trike and that means using a pair of them that in turn drives overall system cost up substantialy.
Driving the single rear wheel of a tadpole trike is the simplest and most cost effective option.
Best bang for the buck is likely to just go with the Bafang BBSHD and put up with the occasional Flintstones reversing, but I'm trying to stay open to options that could allow a powered reverse.

Sorry I'm a little confused.

You requested for a high torque, direct drive hub motor.

Now you think you might want a BBSHD?
Yes, I requested recommendations for a high torque DD hub motor; a drive option that would allow for powered reversing, unlike the BBSHD or any other crank drive and most geared hub motors.
I mentioned the BBSHD in conjunction with Flintstones reversing as the best bang for the buck and simple solution, but I am still interested in exploring other options that would allow for powered reversing such as direct drive hub motors.

Timpo, thank you for the heads up on the XOFO DD45.
I'm now curious to compare it's torque values with the GMAC using the Grin motor simulator.

Gutless at low speeds and hills is the first thing that comes to my mind. Unless this project is going to be run at speeds of 20mph+ frequently for extended periods of time, the mid and hub drives would be a much better plan for their increased low end torque when it comes to accelerating from a stop and negotiating hills.

Most of the internal clutch designs I've seen (hub and mid), that would prevent operation in reverse, can be easily defeated creating a poor man's GMAC.
