How to ride in the smoke.

I was camping in northern lower Michigan last week, and on Saturday the smoke got really bad for several hours. I could really smell it, like standing overtop a camp fire and inhaling the smoke nonstop. I just sat around, no exertion. When it cleared up somewhat in the evening I went for a paddle on Lake Charlevoix.

Even when it wasn't bad enough to stink, the smoke was still there. Most of the week the smoke obscured the distant views.

From afar people don't think much about these 'smoke' stories from 'distant lands'. Here in KC we generally avoid wildfire smoke conditions although there have been a few times with mild impacts. During the last few years I experienced heavy smoke conditions in both Denver and Portland Oregon. It was no joke. I don't have serious health or breathing conditions and I was very uncomfortable. Those with health risks within those smoky conditions could be in serious danger.

. Long sleeve white shirts, blue jeans and any flat shoe is my bike dress ,
I'll just buy white jeans and maybe drop the helmet if it's really hot.
My father wore white dress shirts in summer, hung his left arm out the car window in Houston. No A/C in car prior to 1968. He had operations several times for pre-cancer spots. I haven't had to. His skin was a little pinker than mine; he was a strawberry blonde. Also effective sun screen came to market about 1968. I don't use it on my arms; do on my hands.

N95 mask makes my eyes water, and won't fit under chin guard of my helmet. Fortunately, my nose runs enough to filter out smoke. Usually I mouth breathe on bike, with stopped up nose. But today (192 particles red rating) I nose breathed and just stopped more often and blew my nose.
Days of high ozone make fluid accumulate in my lungs and I cough a lot. I handle that usually by escaping the city to my summer camp 5 days a week. However state hwy dept has 7 miles of Hwy 3 being paved, 9 ' lanes limited by cones & construction equipment. 102" wide trucks will pass me in 9', happened in a 100' long construction zone 2020. I'm stuck here unless I can buy a motor that will handle hilly back roads. 350 W bafang motor burnt on 60th hill of 77 on a back road last year. I received a 500 w motor 10 days ago, still trying to figure out what length spokes to buy.
Everybody drive in circles to save $1 at the super center. All my friends do. Global warming is a myth made up by college profs to oppress the regular people.
The last sentence of your comment correlates nicely with the third sentence.

Mine aren't dress shirts anymore, but I wear white and occasionally seersucker with blue stripes. Usually with collars.
My father would roll the damned windows up so people would think he had a/c in the car when he didn't. No lie.

Here’s the view from about 800 feet up on the Helderberg escarpment south of Albany, NY this morning. Even with the smoky air, it was a pretty good ride up today… only about 70 degrees and the humidity has finally gone away for a few days at least. Needless to say, on a good day this is a pretty good overlook… today, not so much!

Here’s what it ought to look like from another day’s trip up there back in 2019:

Were you being sarcastic, or do you really believe that?
Sarcasm is a defense of the totally ignored. You might be aware, I don't drive a car for errands anymore. Whereas people that will actually talk to me drive 2 ton piles of steel 10 miles to save $1. At least I got the wife into a 1 ton pile of steel.

Sorry, that doesn't answer my question. Do you believe that global warming's some kind of hoax?

Many of the new EVs weigh 3 tons and more. Does that make for an ecologically better world? Unfortunately their build footprint is often less green than an ICE.

My vote is for everyone to be able to choose the vehicle that is most efficient and effective for their personal transportation needs. Maybe I ride my bike, maybe drive a car, maybe take a bus. No government intervention needed.

I'm not the one you asked, but I'll state my belief. The globe has been warming since the "little ice age" which peaked around 500 years ago. Do I think this warming trend is due to human carbon emissions? Not really. Although there may be a more recent uptick in the warming trend, the cause is not certain (correlation does not prove causation) and the temperature data is being manipulated to create scientifically-unsupported extrapolations and to further an agenda involving fear-mongering and scare tactics. Look behind the agenda, observe the flow of the money transfers resulting from the current push, and question everything.

This assumes that 'the public' has some reasonable degree of common sense. I can't speak for your geography, however, common sense and belief in science(s) is lacking in my area.

Most people will believe whatever they hear over and over enough times to convince them. They form an opinion, and they subsequently tend to reject new data without giving that data any real consideration. And that tendency cuts both ways...

True. But this is no excuse for either 'side' of any given issue.

Why are so many Americans anti-science? Did your defence budget totally eradicate quality public education?Apparently. It’s embarrassing to human intelligence to see paranoia replace facts.Happy Riding!

"Destroying any nation does not involve the use of atomic bombs or long-range missiles..
It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students.
Patients die at the hands of such doctors.
Buildings collapse at the hands of such engineers.
Money is lost at the hands of such economists & accountants.
Justice is lost at the hands of such Judges.
The collapse of education is the collapse of the nation." -Mandela
