Hitch or trunk rack, and weight limits

Hmmmmm, does anyone remove their rack? My parking garage is someone compact, and it would help to not have the added length of the rack to contend with all the time.

The 1Up uses a 3/8th allen key to tighten into the hitch (no pin). But the keys they supply have a hollow center. A solid key won't fit. Plus they have a built-up box where the key has to enter, and a hole top and bottom to put a padlock.

After the first tightening, the hitch did loosen. After a full summer I just checked it and it is very tight, tight enough so I could barely move the allen wrench. You don't want someone to be able to just pull the hitch out.

The 1Up rack is guaranteed against theft. They will replace the rack free of charge, that's how confident they are in their locking solution.

The Kuat NV 2 is heavy , awkward, and tedious to install and remove. But you won't believe the quality. I'm like you theft seems to be a major ingredient in this e-bike thang. Up to you . I remove mine. I would probably haul it into a motel if traveling . This thing just shouts bling! You should see drivers reactions when seeing an St2 for the 1st time on that rack.

Wow, they guarantee against theft? That's a great policy.

How hard is it to remove and put back in? (how long does it take)
And how many of you use a padlock through the hole? Or are you confident that because of the specialized allen wrench needed, no one will mess with it?

thanks again for all your feedback

No need to padlock through the hole as the hole is taken up by a piece that helps keep the rack coupled and secure with the hitch. Go to their site, they have video that show their rack in detail.

I don't think anyone will mess with it; if they do, they won't get very far without the special Allen wrench tool. And then again, there's the guarantee for the rack if someone is able to steal it.

Thanks guys/gals!!

Between the 1Up and the Saris, what do you think about the ease of removing and mounting the rack? Do you all leave the rack on your car at all times? For me, I will most likely be removing the rack a lot, because of theft concerns, as well as wanting to keep the length of my car shorter when not using the rack. As I see it, if both racks can handle an ST1 (minus the battery), then the other factors are ease of mounting/dis-mounting the rack, cost, stability (as George mentioned), and the ability to return in case something goes wrong.
1Up makes offers a unique lock that prevents anyone from accessing the removal bolt. Makes theft highly unlikely.

Whoa!

NOTICE: 1up USA.com LLC is no longer replacing stolen racks due to the steep increase in theft. We recommend using a short cable lock or U-lock to secure your investment to your vehicle’s receiver. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

I wonder if this is their way of saying that even with their own lock, theft is taking place? They aren't recommending their own lock, they are recommending other measures... cable or U-lock would seem to me to be quite awkward. What say you guys/gals?

Good stuff PowerMe!

I ordered their own lock.

I think they just aren't very good at connecting the dots, so to speak, in their marketing of items and updating verbiage. The text in the warranty section might have been written before they ever had a lock for the hitch, because they didn't have it when I purchased my rack last March.

Thanks.

I contacted a company in the area that installs hitches (there aren't many, but this one is very highly regarded), and the total damage comes to only $261, so I am ok with that. They not only install the hitch, but also install any adapter and rack. I'm leaning towards the 1UP since you guys have good experiences, and I trust your feedback over the rest, and also the 1Up seems to take up the least room in the back. Some racks extend a good distance out, adding greatly to the overall length of the car, and inhibiting the maneuverability of tight spaces.

One other question about the 1Up - if I get the one bike rack, is there an extender that turns it into a two-bike capable rack? I was watching a video where someone had the one bike rack, and then attached another piece for the second bike holder. For now, I only need one bike holder, but it'd be nice to have the option for a second in the future.

$261 to install a hitch or does that include the hitch? I paid $45 at a local place down the street to do the install. The hitch itself, which I purchased online, was $112. The 1up rack I just slid in and tightened the bolt myself, took 30 seconds, max.

That includes the hitch. I was considering buying a hitch like the one you purchased, but don't feel good about having to go to U-haul to have it installed. When it comes to installing something to the frame of my car, I want capable hands. Still, you paid $100 less! :)

When installing on the car it is not rocket science, must have the correct part and simple yet underneath a car strait bolt in, tighten down appropriately either 4 or 6 bolts into predrilled spot in the frame..

It is that simple if you have lift, 30 min or less

Not sure what year your Acura is but here is an example. Model years change mounting..you may have to use the rear bumper mounting points. Either way there is a hitch to fit your car.

Thanks guys, but see, watching this video? Something like this would take me a whole weekend. I know very little about cars, and really don't like messing with stuff that I don't know anything about. I might re-consider purchasing the hitch and having U-haul install it, but in the end, it might be a lot easier just to have it done at the place for a little extra, where I'll have peace of mind.

I'm all about convenience. And rolling under my car is not something I want to ever do. I'm more than happy to pay for service -- at the price I got it was well worth it!

I work on cars, not a mechanic, and no lift...but I would not do this myself w/o the lift. My point was the cheap places should be able to do this with out problems

Can I ask you guys this - is it a big hassle to remove the rack? I'm getting the idea most of you simply leave the rack on your call most or all of the time...
