Help putting back together Mercedes Smart ebike

So my son and I bought a smart ebike from a guy who said it just needed the back rim fixed. We didn't know what we were getting ourselves in to until we got it home. The guy had taken the whole back apart and changes some parts on bike. I'm not sure what piece are missing. I asked them before I bought it that all the parts were there but to my luck it wasn't the case as it seem to be missing few parts. The back rim is real warped and I'm not sure if that could be repaired as the spokes are different than normal bikes. Wonder if anyone would know were I might be able to buy some spare parts to fix this bike?

Also I tried to put the tire back on the best I can but I'm not sure about the side with the drive gear is correct. Is there something nut or washer than should be holding the rubber piece in place where the drive gear is? If someone can send me a detail pictures of their or give me some advice that would be great.

Any advice on helping my son and me getting this bike back on the road would be very much appreciated.

All bike rims rely on spoke tension to adjust and maintain wheel true (wobble) and round. The good news is that it appears that you have all the spokes and none are broken.

What about the spokes is "different from normal bikes"? The spoke end at the hub motor looks typical with a 90° bend and a mushroomed end thru the spoke hole. I'm having trouble making out any spoke nipples at the rim. Are they actually there? The spoke nipples are of course the adjustment mechanism for spoke tension on most rims. Something like a spoke nipple must be accessible somewhere at your rim. If there are no external nipples take the tire and rim tape off and take a look. Maybe post some pics. I'm curious now.

The biggest issue rehabbing this bike is that BionX, the manufacturer of the drive system is out of business and Mercedes no longer supports the bike.

BionX made special spokes for a few of their drive systems over the years. Good systems, but proprietary and expensive to buy and service. You can look for new, old stock. There are a lot of people that can do custom spokes. The trick is finding one willing to do a small run at affordable prices. There weren't many of these bikes produced. Beautiful bike though. Was big news at the time.

That bike is a belt drive but for some reason there is a chain type front ring on there.

I'm guessing the seller was converting it to a new hub motor and gave up. A good idea for the OP to sell it as a parts bike and save lots of headaches. Just tell the new buyer that all the parts are there.

Yes I looked at it but it doesn't tell you what piece is located at that area in the back. It just tells you how to remove the back tire. I wish there was better pictures.

You nailed it .. So when I got it. It had another bionx back end and he said all the parts are there but you can see I'm missing piece. I want to get it back to the original part and not this frankenstein.
I just need to figure what piece make up the backend. I wish someone who might have this bike can take some detail pictures for me. Atleast I would know what I'm might be missing. The battery seem to be in working order and bionx G2 display is working. I just need to get backend on correct so I can test if it still works.

Tried finding a Smart ebike parts manual on the net but no luck. Maybe a check with your local Mercedes Benz dealer might be in order. This manual found on the net, once you get past the cool, hip female and male models, shows some detailed picks of the back end of the Smart Ebike. I took some photos from Ebay UK of a Smart Ebike for sale:

A check on Ebay Germany showed a Gates front ring and two crank arms for sale, with the usual "may not ship to the US", but it's worth a bother to ask.

IMO, this is one cool, well thought out and engineered city bike. The Gates Carbon Drive is bullet proof as well respected in cycling circles (I have a Trek Soho DLX with the Gates Carbon Drive). I believe the brake system is by Magura, another fine manufacturer. I wish you all the best in putting this bike back together and rolling again. In order to make this happen, it looks like you'll have to sleuth around the internet, to the point of even dealing with sellers in Europe.

But maybe starting with that check with some Mercedes dealers can get you rolling in the right direction. Good luck!
