Has anyone tried the new Rohloff E14 Trigger Shifter

Yeah I'd have to agree with Chazalinó
Typical cable trigger shifter you push forward to the lower gear.
The Rohloff twist is how you would think.. Roll forward to the higher gear.
This said after a week of riding it will become second nature and won't hurt anymore

The way they have it set up, forward is a lower gear, and back is a higher gear.

This follows the Shimano convention: push for downshifting and pull for upshifting. SRAM shifters are push-push (mechanical or electronic), making the things confusing for new riders.

I do note that the literature says it can only be mounted on the right, although I was wondering if that was normal for European bikes..

I know I’ve heard that left and right brake levers are reversed (functionally) for some bikes. Now, that I find confusing!

Brake levers are never reversed. Their functionality is. That is, the hydraulic lines are reversed. In the UK, Ireland and Australia (not sure about NZ), the left brake lever is for the rear brake and the right lever if for the front brake. It is purely for a historical reason, even not related to on which road "soid" the traffic moves. All the rest of the world has the bike brake lever functionality organized as you are used to.

I still have not been able to get mine installed because my E-14 shifter unit was one of the early ones that did not include a serial number sticker. During the update process the app sends the serial number off to Rohloff to check it is in the database. I have written to them to sort it out and this requires them to create a new serial number that they put in the database that will then be matched when I enter it. I will also then need to find someone else with an Android phone.
