Has anyone had to replace their motor?

My Neo Carbon's motor is grinding and it sounds/feels like the gears are binding and skipping. Anyone know how much a new motor costs?

Hi HaveBlue. Grinding noise is definitely issue with the gears in the motor. Depending of the brand of the motor you should be able to replace only the gears.

If it's 8Fun motor for example you can open the motor and replace only the gears module on the top leaving the actual motor untouched.

Usually the electric bike motor cost is around $150 - $200. Good luck.

That's the cost you're paying for running your 36V motor at 48V.
You can purchase a new wheel set+motor for something like $350..

A Neo wheel costs nearly 600 USD though. I for one dread the day I have to start sourcing parts for the rear wheel, manufacturing special tools to open the motor etc.. all without the help of youtube videos or service manuals. I understand BH and the dealers want to make a living too, but scrapping a $600 rear wheel because nobody lists spare parts for the (open market Dapu) motors is not an option.

Just curious, how many miles has the bike gone"

Thanks,

Court J.
The bike is working normally now. I was using a 12ah battery from a Neo Race when this weird grinding happened. The battery was almost depleted. I'm guessing it had something to do with the depleted battery. Possibly from rapid on off pulses that made it seem like grinding. At any rate, it hasn't had any problems since. I'm confused too.

Still sort of wondering on the miles.

I have a geared hub, but the parts to replace the gears and the clutch are available for around $100. I wonder how long they last, but there are different materials for different motors. I'm hoping for 5,000 miles.

Here's the full wheel. I assume there would be a way to just pull the cover off the motor and replace the gears, but where you would get the parts, other than from a dealer? What would a dealer charge?

Around 1,200 miles total.

Only 5k? Gosh, I'm at 2k after 6 months, sure glad to have BH's 5 year warranty.
When you look at the ramp of sales (at least in the US) and the pretty dramatic increase in capability, we are all the pioneers. So I guess nobody knows how this stuff will play out. I'm hoping ebikers will start to delve a little deeper, into this stuff. How much an ebike really costs depends on a lot of things. Having a 5 year warranty would be reassuring, for sure. :)

You are just guessing at the parts cost, George, and it doesn't allow for what the labor would be since this is not your typical plug 'n' play, DIY type of repair. The longer warranty is fantastic for this product and I have to say that some of the issues come from manufacturers not being clear about the capabilities of their motor thus riders are riding the bikes in a way that potentially can cause these type of motors to fail. Our shop's experience over 14 years has been that motors or other primary components that may be faulty due to manufacturer's defects fail in less than a year.

To compare an E Motion system to an alternative is not a balanced argument.

Parts cost. It's $30 for the gears (3) and $25 for the clutch.

Paul mentions circlip pliers and maybe a gear puller for the clutch.

The teardown procedure is here:

Why do I like the Mac?
1) It will draw around 1000w (Utah legal limit) without much heat
2) the gears can be replaced for around $55 (3 gears plus clutch)
3) it may have the best gears out there, to begin with

The history of the BMC (Mac is called a clone) is here:

I wish there was a way to match the two motors, to determine which one is 'best'. What kind of gears do they use in the Neo?

I have a Neo Race which had exposed hub motor wiring due to a crash. (Keep your wiring spring and rubber cover in place next time!) I had the dealer replace the whole core of the motor. The part was $300, labor $100. If you have the hub motor tool it only takes 10 minutes to change it out. The sad part is that the old motor looked brand new, perfect gears, new looking grease, etc.. The only problem was the exposed wiring from the crash.

My Neo Carbon didn't need a new motor. (Although I did replace the motor on my Neo Race)
I happened to be using my Neo race battery on my Neo Carbon at the time. It turns out the Neo Race battery had a broken wire inside. This was causing the surging, grinding thing. Eventually the battery stopped working. I took it to a laptop repair guy. We cracked open the battery and found 3 broken wires. Very tiny gauge wires. He soldered them back up and, boom. Perfectly operational battery.
I had my Neo Prox battery replaced under warranty for a similar issue. I'm assuming it was a broken wire internally too.
If your Neo Bike isn't working properly, it's probably not the battery cells. It's the wiring to the battery management system most likely. Not a super difficult repair for someone like a laptop repair person, although I wouldn't try to fix it myself.

On my 2014 neo jumper with 1,600 miles on it, I had one bad get off on a wet street. And it slammed pretty hard but I was able to ride home. The controller was broke and got a new one. I did two rides with the new controller. Then about 2 weeks later the motor would not engage. It would slightly spin the wheel a quarter turn and give an error message. I can't remember what the error code was but when I looked it up it was referencing the motor. The shop tried to fix it but could not so they sent the rear wheel back to EM to have the motor replaced. It does take some time as it's been a month already. Tough to lose a month+ of riding this time of year. He said this is only the second or third that he has seen go bad. I hope that's the case.
