Greetings from the UK!

Good day! (It's pouring with rain here on the Welsh border)

I just want to quickly introduce myself. My name is Roger and I am 63 year old. I live in Herefordshire, UK, about 1/2 mile from the Welsh border. Our nearest town is Monmouth.

Because I live on top of a hill surrounded on 3 sides by the river Wye I have a steep 500 feet climb at the end of every cycle trip, and this I am afraid has meant that for the last 30 years I have done very little cycling.

Fortunately I have a good friend who lives in Ashland, Oregon who is a mad keen cyclist and who owns many (non-electric) bikes. He persuaded me to take up cycling again by encouraging me to buy an eBike. So, a year ago I bought a Trek Powerfly 5 (2018 model).

It has been a revelation to me. It has turned the impossible (or at least the very unlikely) into the possible and has rekindled my joy in cycling and I have ridden many hundreds of miles on it.

Because of where I live, most journeys involve either steep climbs or steep descents on very rough forest trails and because I am quite a big chap (i.e. fat!) I have carried out a number of modifications to the bike

Tyres: I replaced with Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTBs
Saddle: I replaced with the Brooks E17 saddle from my old Claud Butler.
Saddle Post: replaced with a Suntour SP12-NCX with a heavy duty (red) spring.
Pedals: replaced with Shimano Saint MX80s
Brakes: The biggest (and most expensive) mod. I replaced both sets of brakes with Shimano Saint M820s

Oh, and I added a Crane Brass Bell, which is essential for scattering the hordes of hikers/tourists which infest the trails near the river. I have attached a recent photo.

I am now planning to add a pannier rack and panniers so that I can go further afield (and carry more shopping back from Monmouth!) I would be grateful if anyone with experience of Trek eBikes could recommend a suitable rack which will fit the Powerfly 5 and which will cope with travel over rough terrain.

I look forward to hearing from you

Rog

Rog ...
Welcome to the EBR Forum.

It's been raining incessantly here in Ipswich and my Powerfly 5 (2018 model, too) has stayed snug in the garden shed for the last three days and probably will continue to do so for another two. Spring at last! The grass will turn green, the wallabies will no longer have a valid excuse for eating our seedlings and the local rail trail (just two minutes from home) will have been transformed into a quagmire - except for the stretches which are so rocky that one would not dare venture there with the Powerfly shod with its original Bontragers.

Your changes are along the same lines as mine:
  • Tyres : Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTB + Slime tubes
  • Saddle : Ergon
  • Seatpost #1 : KS Dropzone - 75 mm drop for ease of getting on/off
  • Seatpost #2 : Cane Creek Thudbuster ST
  • Pedals # 1 : Shimano GR500
  • Pedals # 2 : Pedaling Innovations Catalyst
  • Grips : Ergon GP1
  • Handlebar Bag : Klickfix Allrounder
  • Kickstand : Pletscher Comp Flex
And I, too, am thinking of adding a more effective horde-scattering bell - a Timber! MTB "trail bell" (from SJS Cycles) that clangs merrily like a miniature alpine cow bell. Fortunately, it has an off lever.
