Good day! (It's pouring with rain here on the Welsh border)
I just want to quickly introduce myself. My name is Roger and I am 63 year old. I live in Herefordshire, UK, about 1/2 mile from the Welsh border. Our nearest town is Monmouth.
Because I live on top of a hill surrounded on 3 sides by the river Wye I have a steep 500 feet climb at the end of every cycle trip, and this I am afraid has meant that for the last 30 years I have done very little cycling.
Fortunately I have a good friend who lives in Ashland, Oregon who is a mad keen cyclist and who owns many (non-electric) bikes. He persuaded me to take up cycling again by encouraging me to buy an eBike. So, a year ago I bought a Trek Powerfly 5 (2018 model).
It has been a revelation to me. It has turned the impossible (or at least the very unlikely) into the possible and has rekindled my joy in cycling and I have ridden many hundreds of miles on it.
Because of where I live, most journeys involve either steep climbs or steep descents on very rough forest trails and because I am quite a big chap (i.e. fat!) I have carried out a number of modifications to the bike
Tyres: I replaced with Schwalbe Marathon Plus MTBs
Saddle: I replaced with the Brooks E17 saddle from my old Claud Butler.
Saddle Post: replaced with a Suntour SP12-NCX with a heavy duty (red) spring.
Pedals: replaced with Shimano Saint MX80s
Brakes: The biggest (and most expensive) mod. I replaced both sets of brakes with Shimano Saint M820s
Oh, and I added a Crane Brass Bell, which is essential for scattering the hordes of hikers/tourists which infest the trails near the river. I have attached a recent photo.
I am now planning to add a pannier rack and panniers so that I can go further afield (and carry more shopping back from Monmouth!) I would be grateful if anyone with experience of Trek eBikes could recommend a suitable rack which will fit the Powerfly 5 and which will cope with travel over rough terrain.
I look forward to hearing from you
