Going from road to trainor

Ok so strictly e bike. If this is the wrong section please feel free to move it.

My ebike is still way overdue and hasn't shipped from across the country yet. While waiting I'm using my old bike teaching my son to ride and plan to turn it into a full time trainer bike once the ebike arrives.

With the trainer I need to switch the rear axle out to properly fit the trainer, not a big deal to do but I'm wondering if I can use that same axle on the road with my son or do I need to switch it back out till the ebike arrives?

Once the ebike arrives I do plan to replace the tire but I'm waiting to do so till the old bike is purely indoors.

I am not sure what trainer you have. I have a Kinetic and the replacement quick release skewer can be used on and off the trainer.
