i ride a lot by myself and in the summers am often down remote forest roads

last time out went to use google maps on my phone and realized i had no service
was not that far out of town so was surprised, but have hit this problem a lot out in the mtns

anyway decided i wanted a garmin gps to use for seeing where the forest roads went etc
--at the time i did not realize you can download maps on your cell phone and use the gps without cell service-

researching gps i stumbled on these garmin inreach explorers
they do gps, sos to search/rescue etc and 2 way satellite texting

there is a monthly fee but i feel much safer out there knowing i can connect with a friend/police etc if there is an emergency or if my bike breaks down i can get a friend to come pick me up

it allows your friends to track you on your mapshare, which is handy for a lot of things, safety being a priority for me

just wanted to pass this info along to others that may ride out where there is not much cell service etc

the device is kind of old school tech on the gps part, but it bluetooth connects to your cell phone so you can use their earthmate maps on there as a bigger gps screen

at this point it was the best of 2 satellite texting/sos devices i found, hoping next year garmin makes a device like this with a bigger screen

I've had one for the last five years. Originally the product was made and sold by DeLorme, which Garmin bought in early 2017.

No real complaints with the product. I used to carry a Globalstar satellite phone and the InReach is a big improvement.
