You need to ride before you buy. The only recourse it to write a certified letter to the seller, you know where the seller lives, saying it was sold with misrepresentation and that if he or she does not settle with you, the matter will go to court. Also, you might mention in the letter that you will file a Police Report, if ignored for 72 hours. Between the lines, the seller's not knowing the code could indicate that they may have been selling stolen goods at that garage sale. Without saying a thing, it will put fire under their butt, to settle fast. It is the cost of tuition to remember to ride before you buy. Always. Even getting $500 back would be better than a total loss. Some of us may have industry information, but will not publicly disclose this sort of thing in order to thwart bike thefts. Makes sense.
