Electric Tandem Bike

All,

I'm shopping for and Electric Tandem Bike. Need it to take with on a boat, so light weight is important. Also, no need for blazing speed, 15 mph is plenty. Just for cruising after we dock somewhere. My GF does NOT ride by herself so the tandem is perfect. Also, need one where we can peddle independently.

Currently we have a Daymak Classic bike and is pretty good, however, heavy at 80 lbs and currently not working. It's a Canadian bike and they are not supported in the US.

So, looking for options....
 
I have a Gepda torris its 65 pounds with the battery. we had to tweak it and upgrade it to really make it a road/unpaved path bike. it needed a little different gearing. I had to drop the boars down and it needed much better brakes for us. but we got it on sale for 3700.

Following this thread. My neighbor is looking to electrify his tandem, his might be a recumbent, but I haven't seen it. Does have the independent pedals though. I'll ask.
 
This is an area of biking that goes from expensive on up really quickly. Just a motor and batteries alone gets expensive.
 
I always thought the Schwinn tandem mtb'ish that use to run about $500 ( now around $800) was perfect candidate to DIY. My wife and I rented an acoustic tandem and rode it around Sanibel Island for a weekend years ago and did great together. Although I think it would be ackward on the back of our Crosstrek it could sit on top of our Aliner for road-tripping, keeping the 20" folder below deck. As far as range I would use the motor on hills and pedal the rest of the time. Of course the fact my wife is not the least bit interested makes this a non-starter. :)

A tandem is kind of hard to justify unless one of the riders can't ride alone like the OP's GF, foofer's wife, or my neighbor's wife. Two bikes cost less, are easier to store and transport, and get far more frequent use.

yes but some just like it. but iti s more expensive and takes practice to do it it well.

A very cool way to travel for those willing to master one though. I met a couple of men who were traveling up the east coast on a tandem, one man was nearly blind and the other had a chronic leg problem, but between the two of them they had logged thousands of miles on a manual tandem; traveling from the Carolinas up to New England and back. Also thieves don't seem as interested in tandems, they said.
 
No doubt it takes practice to ride efficiently on a tandem, I thought my wife and I were able to actually ride it pretty well from the get/go. Why? No idea. I think an eTandem would be cool on R2T. Two bikes are far more practical.

its not hard to ride its takes practice to be efficient and have it go smoothly. with our tandem the peddles are not locked together my wife can peddle while I don't but she cant peddle faster then me too it also can be tricky to start if we p=ush too hard or if the assist level is too high we will throw the chain off.

Did you decide on a tandem brand? I would love to know what you got.
We are looking for an e-tandem too. I love my Fuji ebike but my vision isn't very good and it isn't getting better.
I found Van Raam Tandem in CO which is the closest dealer to us in AZ.
 
There’s a couple in my cycling group that have a Pedego tandem. Sharp looking red bike. The motor operates independently from the drive train. They only use the motor for windy days or hills. I have no idea of the weight or cost.
