electric mountain bike from china

My wife and I are (late 50's) Americans living in Nosara Costa Rica. We want to rent electric mountain bikes to our resort guests (our place is called Jungle's Edge). The terrain is hot and hilly dirt roads close to the beach... paradise, lol.

We have spent hours on your site and we want to say thanks first and foremost. We are looking at buying the best electric mountain non folding bike they have. Price is very important, that is the reason we have sourced China and we feel that a lot come from there anyway. They have the Hummer and the YECB 750SX Battleship (gotta love these names). What would you recommend ?

In terms of frame I would suggest the step-through as this is more suitable for the greater range of guests. I am assuming that your guests are maybe more inclined to be older rather than younger guests seeking adventure and hence the step-through frame allows for easier mounting and dismounting.

I notice both bikes have high-speed motors which may not be so suitable for climbing but the 48V battery may help here. More experienced e-bike members really need to comment on this aspect but

Hey David,

You might want to look into another very similar company from China called Simino Ebike which makes similar models. Some of the models are exact replica of Volton Alation and few other models have aesthetic appeal (which lacks in many china made bikes). If you buy in 5's or 10's, you can get them for $600.

Since you are buying in bulk, you might want to bargain/get a written statement or something for warranty.

I just clicked on the link above and the website was hilarious. The picture on the top left corner shows a bunch of American "looking" people who appear to be engineers that work for the company. HA Then I read some of the text and there are numerous grammar and word choice errors. Some are funny.

Yes great thought on the step thru, you have touched on the exact subject of concern up to now. With hilly conditions what watt and volt battery should we order? also what is the over all opinion of the battleship bike they offer ?

Hi David, the Battleship is definitely the way to go here. Andrew made an excellent point about the step-through design being accessible to more riders. Depending on the average height and size of your visitors you could always get a few of the high step designs as well (they also offer the stronger 48v battery due to increased weight of the frame and anticipated larger users). Ultimately, the ST 500 will offer an average sized 36v battery which isn't bad.

I doubt anyone here has ordered one of these bikes so thoughts on shipping, delivery, warranty, quality etc. will only be guesses. I'm not sure if they're identical but I have ridden both the Volton Alation 500 and Alation Step-Through 500 and they're wonderful bikes. Volton may be willing to ship to Costa Rica or give you a bulk price but warranty and servicing is going to be a challenge with any company so maybe they'd cut the price since it will be sort of a one-time final sale deal? I'd ask them because the way it works with these Chinese companies is that they will design a bike for a company (Volton in this case) and then sell a knock off version internationally knowing that the company doesn't have the resources to fight it. Oakley had this problem for many years with their glasses being pirated... even though they had design and brand patents in the US.
