eBike sightings in the wild--sharing remarkable ebiking stories

On our family vacation to Anacortes and the San Juan Islands that involved three days of eBike daytripping, we saw a lot of ebikes. Not "a lot," but, I did see 2-3 or more ebikes per day.

One of these encounters stands out from all of the rest, and I thought I'd start this thread as a place to share ebiking stories you encounter, too.

This is the story of Tim and his business, San Juan Kayak Expeditions, a sea kayak outfitter in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington State. Here's a photo of one of Tim's company vehicles:

But what draw our family's attention to Tim, as he came down to the waterfront to deliver some inflatable pads to a departing kayaking group, was his other company vehicle:

It's a white ebike with a white battery. I recognized it as an older model. He started chatting with my husband, and, of course, talking ebikes. When I joined the conversation, I learned that Tim bought his bike in 2011. He said he has 20,000 (estimated) on his ebike, that he rides every kayaking season for his business. If you look at the picture, you'll see his business name is on the ebike. He's into the black-and-white theme and also has decorated his bike with black-and-white racing tape. I noticed his battery was color-matched to the bike, which isn't the case for more recent models--I asked "Is that the original battery?" "Yep!" he answered. He said that he plugs the bike in whenever it's in the office. While this isn't what I've heard to be the recommended practice these days, it sure has worked for him! Everything else on his bike is original, too--his original seat is in great condition, and his original grips just have a bit of fraying on the cording. He said he has replaced the tires, and is due to replace them again soon. He also said the first year he had the bike he was in a crash, and the frame broke where the rack connects to the main frame. The ebike company sent him a new bike when he showed them a photo of the frame break. I asked for a photo of his odometer and he said that 20,000 miles is an estimate because his display failed some time ago (I didn't get those details), so the mileage shown is not the total miles for the bike.

This is such a great story. Tim is enthusiastic about his bike, 7 years and still going strong. It was great to meet him.

I wish I kept a picture of a guy's EZ_Pedaler, ebike that was about 4 or 5 years old. It had duct taped throttle, brakes, misc cables, and it stopped running about a year ago??? Battery maybe worked? LED control worthless, since told you nothing. It looked more like it was 10 year old technology. Super heavy. He probably paid at least $1800 for it. definitely a sighting 'in the wild' but on the opposite end of reliability of San Juan dude's ebike.

On my ride with a buddy on Sunday, and in the parking lot of launch point for the Mud Bay run, there were singles, families on bikes, the lycra crowd, and a husband/wife with a pair of ebikes.
Of course I immediately gravitated towards them and said hello.
Both of them remarked positively on my ride, and they love their ebikes as well.
It was a first for me to see people out at the same time as my ride. A very popular trail helped I suppose.
No negatives uttered. It was a great day.

That would have been a sight to see! Was this a bike brought in to you for servicing? I bet you've seen everything since you own an ebike shop!

This isn't remarkable by any means but a bit of a coincidence. I made my first trip with the ebike to the C&O Canal Historic Park in Maryland back in May. National parks don't officially allow ebikes on most trails but I read that the rule isn't actively enforced along the C&O. I was a bit apprehensive as I pulled into my favorite trail parking area, fearing I might be turned away. Instead, the first two people I saw heading down the trail were an older couple riding twin seafoam colored Pedego Interceptors, identical to ebikemom's! Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to talk with them since they were long gone by the time I parked and unloaded my bike.

@6zfshdb, the seafoam green is quite dazzling, is it not? Hard to miss!

@JayVee , what a wonderful program that the Geneva is offering free ebike loaners on weekends--that's a great way to get the uninitiated on an ebike. :)

Thanks for sharing!!

You were smart to go in May ...

I would say what surprised me is that “out there” does not resemble “in here.”

Most-sighted (ownership): Pedego, by a mile. I even bumped into a Pedego of Long Beach (Ca) outing.
Most-sighted (rental): Specialized Como and (low-numbered) Vado. Saw a lot of bike shops stocking these for rental.
Most-sighted (under-30): DIY

In my area I don't see many Pedego, probably because we aren't in CA. I see Rad, Trek, Haibike, Specialised, kit builds, ...

Indeed it is!. Like the color or not, you would recognize it from several hundred feet!. I personally do like the color, and color matching the rims makes it really outstanding. If I was in the market for a new Pedego, it is a color I would ask for.

My wife has a Blix Aveny in what they call "Racing Green" ... reminds me of "john deere green", but darker. Again it is a color that just "fits" the bike and everyone who sees it takes a second look.

I wanted the extra features of the Platinum Interceptor which only comes in a silver / platinum color. Had seafoam been available, I likely would have chosen it.

I ran into a guy with a Bionx DIY on his bike. The hub motor was massive in diameter and either 8-or-10-sided, vs truly round. I assume that’s because it had to be thinned out (thus gaining in diameter) to fit the wheel, as it didn’t appear any spokes connected directly to it like on my hub motor. The battery housing was pretty bulky, but just slightly lighter in weight than mine and slightly more amp hours. He’d been very happy with the whole setup, though thought he had developed a short, as the power would cut out if hitting a biggish bump. He’d just bought a new Specialized (I think). We chatted quite a bit, and of course I put in a plug that he needed to check this website out (for both his Bionx shorting, and the new ebike.)
