That question has been plaguing mankind for a long time. I guess I would go down the list of fittings until you hit an important one that cannot be cheaply or easily adjusted or look right. Like if you were tall on a medium bike you might have a foot+ of seat post. So how tall are you and what is your inseam? Changing stem is cheap and easy. Changing cranks harder and more expensive. I am 5'9" and a 31.5 inseam. I might have to move my saddle back and shorten my stem on the large in order to get my knee/pedal position correct.. We all have different riding styles, some more relaxed, some more upright, but you know all this. I guess the good news is that either bike can be tuned. Maybe that toe overlap is the deciding factor. Try to take pedals and shoes for the sitting. Only way to really tell. My LBS put my pedals on for the test ride. I wish I had the opportunity to ride this past week I might know more about how the bike fits. The only change we have done so far is to flip the stem ver which gave it a bit mire rise for a more upright position. Very minor rise in the stem. Have fun shopping.
