40 mph on a bicycle ?
Sooner or later there will be enough disastrous wipeouts and the legal beagles will be entering with a whole new set of rules and regulations. My motorcycle brakes at high speeds were FAR more effective than brakes on a 40 mph bicycle. I remain shocked by the number of sloppy DIY builds with crap brakes. 4 piston Magura brakes would give me some comfort.

The problem I see with high-speed bikes is the number of cages making left turns in front of me thinking i was coming at them at bicycle speeds. (yes, been there done that but had an epiphany, a moment of sudden insight. My 70 y/o body might not recover. All high-speed motors and my 2wd build are gone.

Now before I frustrate readers let me say I have no problem with the poster's 40mph decision. Just not the best choice for me and perhaps the future of eBikes. Sounds more like a situation for a SurRon style.

BTW with the finger-pointing and name-calling you fellas might end up smearing your lipstick.:p😁

YEP.
One , I have gone 130 MPH on a motorcycle which is much more dangerous than 40 on a bike.
Two , I have a brown belt in Judo so I can safely fall at much greater distance and speed than you could imagine.
Three , I own and fly airplanes...nuff said.
Sorry, can't resist. No experience regarding Judo (or anything to do with it), but I would suggest that high speed experience on a motorcycle, or in an airplane, would have nothing to do with a bicycle doing 40mph. Consider that there are major differences in design criteria in play here.

If you want to play on a bicycle doing 40mph, I say go for it. Just don't implicate motorcycles and/or airplanes as part of that decision. From where I sit, it's pretty clear to see they are in a WAY different league. Many years experience with both here, but there's no way on God's green earth I'm going to be on a bike doing 40mph. Not on purpose anyway! -Al

Yeah they are WAY more dangerous !

The point is, everyone is NOT the same and what scares one person may be, a walk in the park for another.
To judge another person by your standards contains TWO major mistake.

Best to live your life according to your rules, and don't worry about others.

People travel in planes flying hundreds of miles an hour every day.

People ride motorcycles, safely, at freeway speeds (or maybe a little higher) every day.

Bicycles at 40mph? Maybe not so much, but you are free to do as you like. Not trying to take that away from you.

I'm betting you are among a generation MUCH younger than I am, many of whom still think they are bullet proof. That they can/will survive anything. You're eventually going to find/learn that often that's not the case. Many in your age group learn that the hard way. My ONLY purpose is to provide reason to make you think first. Then do whatever strikes your fancy - carefully.

Did a max speed run the other day and with pedaling, somehow I was able to hit 38.6 MPH !
As I understand it, an increase of amps should only improve acceleration, not speed, yet before the mod, I was only able to hit 33 MPH level and pedaling. What gives?
I'm curious what you're gearing is. On my Himiway I run out of gear about 29 mph (7th gear). Been thinking of changing the front sprocket to a 52 tooth.

Front 42, rear 11 tooth. I really have to pedal like the devil at those speeds.

Thanks for the reply. I think my smallest sprocket on the cassette is 14. Did you change the gearing if so what is the source of the cassette?

No it's the original gear set for a Trek, Mountain Track. Am considering going to a 48t chain ring, although it's not something I would need to use often.

Ok great info thanks. Like I said am considering a front sprocket change, but in reality don't need to run that fast most times.

I am waiting for Bolton Ebike to come out with their upgraded 35 amp controller that will be plug and play for the Himiway bikes. Bolton already has an upgrade for the RAD bikes and really improves the overall performance. I don't think the kit for the Himiway will offer as much of an improvement as the Himiway controller can already be set to 25 amps via this the display.

Wait what?
Are you really saying going 130 on a motorcycle is safer than 40 on a bike??
Come on man .
Common sense say otherwise.

You guys are not the first to try and question my actions...in fact I have to give credit to my detractors, because they actually accidentally pushed me to become a self made multi millionaire; aircraft owner; scuba diver; brown belt in Judo ect ect ect. All the while the "knowitalls" say, beware, watch out, you can't do that.

I really don't give a damn if you can't understand my point about living your own life and stop judging others by your own standards ! Sheesh, if your so old, why don't you know this rule by now?
Just know your very criticisms may very well cause your attempted targets, success !
Consider yourself BURNT !
PS you have no clue about my age so stop assuming !

JES2020:

I've maxed out at 42mph on my Cyrusher XF800 Fat tire going down hill. upgraded controller (30a), upgraded gearing 53T chainring, Bafang 750w motor that peaks at 1500watts. I can manage 34mph average on flat land pedaling like hell.

I commute 52 miles round trip a day and my overall average speed in 6,000 miles is 28.8mph according to the cycling app I use.

40mph is not outrageous as some here seem to think, use common sense and be safe.

Re-read my comment please. There is nothing there about 130mph on a bike. I said freeway speeds, maybe a LITTLE higher. I was thinking maybe 85mph....

I also said this: "Then do whatever strikes your fancy - carefully."

Enjoy your life in your bullet proof fantasy world. Just realize it's only going to take one mistake, one accident, to change your outlook a ton. Your experiences are NOT unique, no matter what you are thinking. Been there.... and then some......

Not saying you can't. Not saying you shouldn't. I'm saying you need to use your head.....

Exactly, and they make a big mistake judging others by their standards.

I am, never would have beleived I would make it to this age to be honest. My message is this, the ONLY reason I made it this far is through erroring on the side of caution when it comes to my abilities.
