Considering removing fenders on Trek 8s

Has anyone removed the fenders from their Trek 8s or 9.9s? If so, were there any issues? I don't commute at all, and NEVER ride in the rain, so fenders are not necessary, and I hate the rear rack on this bike anyway. Thoughts?

I don't think it would be an issue then. you will lose your rear light of course. well if you put another rack on then you should be able to light some way or the other.

I've removed the front fender. The rear fender is a little tougher, it has the wireing for the rear light and helps support the rack. The rack also supports the fender, they are symbiotic.

Thanks...I hate the rack, so all the better that it is gone too :)

What do you expect to gain by removing the fenders and rack? Weight savings? Their weight is pretty trivial. Most folks NEVER ride in the rain, until they do...

I always have a Topeak trunk bag on my bikes. This rack doesn't allow that, and I just can't get use to the look. I also own a Vado 4 and Giant Explore E+2....those both have their fenders intact. Thanks..... Trek missed the mark on this one, and if it had not been for the Purion display, I would have purchased the 7s just because it had a traditional usable rack..

You can use a trunk bag with the (stupid) allant rack, if you modify the rack. (sorry about the messy garage...)

You can also just fit a different rack over the top, save you the hassle of removing the old one. You can carry a much heavier load on a different rack (ie 25kg instead of 15kg). Like this:

This thread inspired me ask my local bike shop to remove the fenders on my soon-to-be-delivered Allant+ 9.9s.

Personally, I think the Trek fenders are super ugly. And, like you, I don't need them. I'll be using my Allant for fair-weather road riding with some younger, hardcore riders — namely, my partner and her riding group. People that I would otherwise never be able to keep up with. I've ridden with them on my PowerFly 4 a few times but that's a horrible bike for long road rides.

Anyway, they (the local bike shop) say that fender removal is a pretty frequent request from Trek commuter bike buyers — usually because the customer wants a different fender/rack combination. But they also say I am not alone when it comes to wanting a bike like this one with no fenders at all.

By the way, they just clip the wire to rear light, cap it, and tuck it back in the frame in the case of a full fender delete. They usually retro-fit the light to the new rack if the customer goes that route.

P.S. They're going to delete the Bosch phone holder for me too as I've read lots of horror stories about expensive phones popping out on bumpy surfaces AND because I don't want to use my phone as the computer head unit on the Bosch system (have you ever tried to use your phone in sunlight for nav, etc.?). I'm having them install a Bosch Kiox instead with its remote.

I removed my front fender so the hook on my bike rack came in contact with the tire and not the fender. My LBS had to show me how to get it done. 8s
