Budget ebikes <$1000

There's not much love here for sub $1k ebikes, so I'd like to start a discussion. There aren't that many choices:

1. DIY is probably the best option at this budget, but not everyone wants to do that

2. Chinese brands like Ancheer. I personally wouldn't trust the batteries & build quality.
3. Used/demos/refurbs. Some options below:

1. Ride1Up ROADSTER
$849 (on sale)
(Link Removed - No Longer Exists)

Class 3, 500W rear-hub motor, frame comes in one size
I didn't find a review here but this seems like a great deal.

2. GenZe e101/102
Nearly used on sale starting at $699
Get $100 off nearly new via referral link
Class 2, 350W motor, several frame size options
Review of the older model: https://electricbikereview.com/genze/recreational-e102/

3. Find a used Sondors or Rad Power off craigslist or something, ~$800-$900

I have some experience putting motors on my bikes, both old beater bikes and new models. I will say this. It's probably cheaper to buy a complete inexpensive ebike. I have to pay the markups for the motor, battery and electrics to middlemen, whereas the importer buys a bike directly from the factory with one smaller markup.

Earlier this year, I bought a Ecotric folding fatbike for $779 shipped. Yeah, I would have spent $500-600 just on motor and battery. I think it's a decent bike, for a fat tire bike, I have a review on it in the "Other" forum where I discuss it. Seems to be some love for it and other Ecotric models on the Ecotric owners group on facebook.

Also a lot of love here at the Lectric XP forum. Their version of the not-so- little folding fatbike was over $1000, but I believe it has been less in the past, and is $879 for Black Friday. They've got their own subforum now,

And then you have several models, Schwinn,Hyper and Kent for under $1000 at Walmart's web site.

As usual. Caveat Emptor. Buyer Beware.

As well as EBR I’ve found video reviews of budget ebikes on the Kevcentral and electrek YouTube channels

Here is a great article on a number of Black Friday eBike deals available now ;)

Lectric XP folding electric bicycle
I recently reviewed the Lectric XP folding fat tire electric bicycle and found it to be an incredible bang-for-your-buck deal.
The e-bike can hit speeds of up to 28 mph, has a range of 25-50 miles and folds to fit in tight spaces.
It even comes with higher-end parts than you’d expect, like disc brakes, full-metal fenders, built-in lights and a strong rear rack.
The Lectric XP is normally priced at $1,099 but is on sale now for just $879.

Kent Step-Through E-bike
Kent’s step through e-bike is a great option for city commuters. Its step-through design makes it easy to mount and its large 700c wheels are perfect for rolling over speed bumps, potholes, curbs or anything else the urban jungle can throw at you. It’s normally a thousand dollar e-bike but is on sale now for just $798.

Hyper E-ride electric bike
Even more affordable than the Kent Step-Through e-bike above is the Hyper E-ride.
This 20 mph e-bike can travel up to 20 miles on a charge and is already a deal at its normal price of $798.
But now you can grab it for an even better price of $598.

But now you can grab one for just $599 with the coupon available on the Amazon page.

ORCA MARK I folding seated scooter
I know this one looks like an e-bike, but it’s actually a seated scooter. It’s also an incredibly powerful scooter with a 48V battery that can last for up to 37 miles. It can also hit a top speed of 21 mph.The scooter offers full suspension and folds to fit into small spaces.

Continued...
Here is a great article on a number of Black Friday eBike deals available now ;)

Ride1Up Roadster Ghost e-bike
The Roadster Ghost electric bicycle from Ride1Up was already a heck of a deal at $949, but is now discounted to $849.
This bike gets up to 28 mph with a hand throttle or pedal assist and has a range of 20-40 miles, depending on how you ride it. The 500W hub motor will also be plenty for hill climbing.
And you can get free accessories including free panniers with your order if you use the coupon code HOLIDAYGIFT at checkout.

Ride1Up 700 Series e-bike
And while we’re already on Ride1Up, you’ll want to take a look at their new 700 Series e-bike as well. It is available for pre-order for $1,499, marked down from its MSRP of $1,599.
For that price, you get an impressive suite of components including a hydraulic suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, rack, fenders, integrated LED lights, Schwalbe Super Moto tires, color display and more. Plus it’s as fast as any other e-bike on this list. And just like with the Roadster Ghost above, you can get free accessories including free panniers with your order if you use the coupon code HOLIDAYGIFT at checkout.

GenZe “nearly new” electric bikes
GenZe is selling their floor models and other nearly new e-bikes for a huge discount. The bikes, which offer speeds up to 20 mph and come with slick integrated batteries, have already gotten a great review from us. They normally cost upwards of $2,000 but are on sale in “nearly new” condition for $649-$799.

Now Blix has some great deals as part of its early Black Friday sale. And in addition to the prices below, you can take a further $50 off with the coupon code ELECTREK.
The Blix Aveny is normally priced at $1,899 but is on sale for $1,399.

Swagtron EB7 Plus
Swagtron’s EB7 Plus is a great little folding e-bike that I myself have enjoyed riding. Its 16″ wheels help it fold into a tiny package, yet its still powerful enough to reach speeds up to 18 mph. It’s discounted from $770 to $699 on Amazon and on Swagtron’s site. But as part of Swagtron’s holiday deal, you can take an additional 5% off by using the coupon code GIVING-IS-SWAG on Swagtron’s site, which will also mean that Swagtron donates 5% of the sale to the charity Toys For Tots.

InMotion P2 Mini E-bike
If you want to go even smaller than the Swagtron EB7 Plus above, look no further than the InMotion P2 Mini E-bike. This cute little thing maxes out at 19 mph and can hit 19 miles of range on throttle-only operation. You can also help pedal and get even more range out of it. The bike is normally priced at $899 but is discounted to $599.

Taga family electric cargo bikes
Taga makes some interesting electric trikes that can support an adult rider and up to three children as passengers.
I got the chance to review one and had a blast riding around with my nephews.

The bikes normally cost around $3,400 depending on accessories, but are on sale for 50% off right now!

GenZe just slashed another $100 off their nearly new bikes for Black Friday week, so with another $100 referral link discount, you can get one for $549. This is pretty hard to beat if you're price conscious.

Re: Genze are offering free delivery, 90 day warranty, all sales are final. These are fire sale prices, but when you can return an Amazon or Walmart bought bike, that's a pause for thought

Very true. I don't care too much about return, since it's a huge hassle to ship back a bike, but I'm disappointed that GenZe didn't offer a longer warranty, especially given that I do have authorized GenZe servicers in my area. I think the $1300 deal from Costco last year came with one or two year warranty, but this is less than half the price. I'm waiting for my bike to arrive soon, fingers crossed.

The problem with the under $1000 ebikes for me is small motors and is the frame is too large. Even a Rad Rover was too tall for my 5'6" body. In Washington State I cannot avoid the hills.

Interesting, I'm even shorter but I didn't think a 5'6 person would have problems. I went with the GenZe because it's on sale and has 16" frame option. There are also folding bikes that have small frames. I've ridden hills with a 350W bike and it's slow but not a big deal if you want to get some exercise.
I can't buy a more expensive bike due to rampant bike theft in my area. I saw tons of stolen ebikes on OfferUp.

Lectric has a regular xp and a step thru. around $900. Also very reasonable are the Ride1Up Core5 and the Espin Nero. The Nero was $999,00 on sale, now a little more. The Espin Sport and Flow are $1200.00 including hydraulic brakes, suspension form, fenders, rear rack, 500 watt motor and name brand parts.

There's not much love here for sub $1k ebikes, so I'd like to start a discussion. There aren't that many choices:

A decent review from Electrek for a budget bike that's under $700 shipped. ;)

I have been kicking around the idea of having one of these around for company. If anyone can ever come and visit again! Hard to beat the price and if it is only used sometimes then it should last a while. I live up a steep hill, I wonder if they have enough juice to climb it.

The GenZe for $780 from Crazy Lenny seems like a good deal except GenZe has exited the business.

It is a good deal, Lenny’s Genze’s are not the refurbished 1st gen 100 series bikes Genze sold at a discount through their website, but the 2nd gen 200 series bikes Genze supplied to Helbiz Bikeshare in Washington DC and other cities, the Sturmey Archer front drum brake makes it an all weather commuter, and I found the Microshift shifters worked well.
