Brake Cables

Rear brake cable broke today on wife's bike while I was doing a stationary bike check. It broke somewhere near the middle. 5300 miles.
I had changed her front one and my rear one already due to slight fraying. These cables should be replaced every two years for safety on these heavy bikes, especially if salt air and rain, but I forgot. Not sure about cables online, if the Rad ones lasted that long I'm getting more, always keep a spare set.

just get Shimano brake cables for mountain bikes. any bike shop will have them .

I keep spares from Rad, just used my last one. With the Rad ones it’s full length sheathing which should be replaced at least on the rear. Only $8 including the cable.

This seems to make a good case for insisting on stainless cables - wherever you decide to source them.

High Quality cables and housings are more that worth it. Trek Bontrager has three tiers. I often like to run gun oil inside premium housing such as Jagwire. Responsive shifts and brakes will sell a bike. It is no good to shift and wait for it.
