Installed the new Connex sprocket + 10 speed shimano xt cassette and a new kmc chain. Cut the chain two links longer. I am not using a chainguard since I felt like it is not really going to help against chain drops.
30 mile ride, shifting is perfect again, actually better than new. Everything is quiet, runs smoothly and no sign of tendency towards dropping the chain.
