Bladder range.

We have talked a lot in the forum about the range one can achieve on their e-bikes based on wind, terrain, battery capacity, motor assist level, etc. My wife and I are anxious to get our ebikes back out on the local trails as the weather improves this spring. But I now realize that the range we can achieve on our rides is no longer based on any of these metrics. While our county has kept the multi-use trails open so far, they have closed all the toilet facilities and other public facilities in the parks and trails. Bladder range ... will definitely limit our rides this season to a few hours. Is anyone else limiting their rides because of this?

Wife might be, but I have no shame in taking a quick walk at right angle to the trail into an area that looks particularly dry.

Truth be told, we can generally be OK in the bladder dept. on our rides - which are generally determined by how long we can stand a sore butt. 20 miles or so about does it for us....

My 66 year old bladder needs relief every hour....trails are the best, as the trees are always in need of watering. In town, is more of a problem, but there are some gas stations on my route.

So, overall, no impact on my riding distances.

What are you guys bladdering on about?
Anyway... I'm lucky to have lots of staying power in this area at 63 y/o.
Things can change when you get up in the morning though...

I do many rides among fields and woods. The chance for emptying the bladder exists. The problem happens with the long road-cycling bibs with braces, requiring taking off all outer jackets first then the braces next. The real problems happen in cities. Once I was hard pressed; found a deserted place and did everything to behave decent. Yet, the police noticed me and I had a lot to explain 🤣

Hey, the potty is closed so ya' gotta go, or diapers?
'They can look away ' Noun'?
Easy for me, a pointer, to say I'm goin' watch out !
Nobody get in the way.
I imagine this is why ladies used to wear the longer skirts, my man.

Ed: Mindfull afterthought, Real men the world over wear KILTS and incur no public indecency in the park. I think.

Not an issue for me since there's a men's room behind every tree. On some of our rides, the wife uses this handy device:

Makes every tree a women's room as well. It's light weight and stores easily in it's own pouch.

I'm pretty lucky, most of our parks have out houses. I can ride to a lake of choice which all have little bathrooms, swim, eat, drink, and pee to my hearts content.

Our parks have restrooms of various quality as well. Unless they've been locked up due to the virus threat. That's eliminated pretty much all public restrooms I know of....

It's still cool up here so I have not been out on a good ride yet, I forgot about the virus aspect. That's gonna suck with no restrooms.

Our trails have pit toilets too, but they are now locked and/or wrapped with "Caution" tape. We took our first ride of the season on our local trail yesterday. As far as "bladder range", my wife who rides a etrike decided that 12 miles is about all she could risk. I could have easily gone at least twice that distance, but with the trike, she only averages about 8 or 9 MPH. With the loading/unloading of the bikes and the trip to and from the trail, we were gone about 3 hours. So until things open back up, it seems these shorter rides will probably be our limit.

There were many more people on the trail than there were on a typical weekday last year. I guess that is to be expected with so many folks unable to go to work or do other activities. We were able to maintain the social distancing recommendations except for the brief encounter when passing or meeting another person on the trail. We did not see anyone wearing a face mask, but many were wearing gloves. We decided to not stop and rest at any of the benches or tables, so we didn't touch anything except our own bikes. With this many people on the trail and the trees still bare of leaves, going behind a tree isn't really an option whether you are male or female, at least on the narrow rail trails like we have in our area.

I look forward to the day when we will again be able to take a longer ride and have a "place to go" when nature calls.

It would probably be easier to limit caffeine/fluids consumption before going on a ride. Now that the weather's warmer, I wear shorts, and it's easy to find an alley, peer off at something you appear to be studying or pretend to be checking something on the bike, and do a discrete bleed. Years of experience w/ this in Hawaii helps. If you're a wahine (Hawaiian for female), it won't work.

When my brother and I did a several thousand mile bicycle ride back in the seventies, we learned to pee while riding. Obviously you can't do it just anywhere. The hardest part is convincing your bladder it's OK to relax while seated on a rolling bicycle. You asked.

How do you pee while riding?

Pictures?

No pictures please. I'd rather not carry that mental image around with me the rest of my life. Just the concept was bad enough!
