Battery for back with higher Ah

I've had my iGo Explore since 2017. It has a reention Dorado L505 Samsung 48volt 10.5 Ah battery. 500 watt hub DD.
I love the bike it's never given me issues. One rear flat tire that took me a couple of hours to pull, repair, remount.

I go for long rides and lots of hills and I ride all year long even in our winters of minus 25 celsius (that's just what it is where I live). That said I would like to have a back up battery.

My question is, if I buy a reention Dorado 48 volt 21 Ah battery with the higher Ah and use it will I kill the controller or motor? I don't need to go faster I'd just like to go further.

All you are doing is the equivalent of adding a bigger gas tank to your car. Same voltage, all is good.

That's what I thought but a guy at a local dealer said not to do it because it could ruin the controller.

Gotta love some of these dealers.....or not!

I couldn't agree more. Another dealer wanted me to bring the bike and come in first before they would let me know if they could even sell me a battery.

My dealer will apply a higher level of scrutiny to random enquiries for batteries as they have a habit of coming from people with stolen bikes. It could be that. Or them just wanting to be sure they were on the right path. Kudos for your test round riding.. - 25C sounds bracing!

No from what I know it will not harm the controller, people have changed out the Lectrics 10ah battery for a 14ah and as long as its the same voltage it should be fine for more range.

Service shops don't seem to be very helpful here, they seem more interested in inventory sales and upsells than service.

That's actually pretty typical in my experience. Doesn't breed or encourage much trust does it? Forces you as a rider to educate yourself by asking a lot of questions - of your dealer - and places like this one.

It's brisk in the winter but I love it. Gets in the blood stream. That said I lost a closed acorn lug nut off my rear hub motor and can not find a replacement for it. Someone should open up a ebike shop here because there is no one in that market space here in Edmonton, Alberta.

A standard open nut will work in a pinch, as I'm sure you suspect.

So true! But hey it's all on them. You can only give someone the chance to shine or let you down.
I lost a closed acorn lug nut on my rear hub. Can't find one to save myself. I left a message with iGo so hopefully someone has them. That's a necessity.

Great question. I went to NAPA auto, Partsource, OK Tire, and another Tire shop and none of them had the lug nut. The staff at NAPA measured it thought it was 1/2" tried a 1/2" that didn't fit (which didn't fit lol) then said he didn't have anything that would work.
I don't know the size or thread otherwise I would just call around or order online.
Does anyone know the size and thread on the acorn closed lug nut? Screenshot_20200903-184842~2.png

That looks like what I will have to do. Going to go to Home Depot or Canadian Tire tomorrow to pick up some, I think it's a metric. I don't know the size or thread on it. Someone else thinks it's a 14mm. Any thoughts on the size?

I'd be willing to bet metric, but that's about al the help I can be. Many stores have a display to help determin that though. You would just take the other side with you to measure/try.

Yeah a thread checker which I was shocked the folks at NAPA and Partsource did not either have or wanted to use.
I'm calling ahead to both of the hardware stores to see if they have a thread checker. Like you say an open nut will do but it would be nice to have the closed and keep the bike stock.

I'm guessing metric too.

I could be wrong but I don't think Asian countries use imperial system.
All my other bikes are open. But they are a smaller bolt size. You're right, I can't see it being Imperial either. A thread checker would have answered that one right away. I may zip over to CDn Tire tonight and see if they have a nut or a thread checker.

All my ebike hub motors use M12 x 1.25 axle nuts. I've never found them at the local hardware store or at Lowes/HD. I did buy a set off amazon once ($2.50 per nut) , but I see none available at the moment.

You may have lost the rubber cap that goes over the axle nut. No motor with any kind of power would stay on an ebike long with only one nut.

And there it is 12x1.25mm, mystery solved. I got 2 at Canadian Tire. Praise to the 16 year old that checked the shop and found me some.

Yup 12x1.25. Nissan and Subaru (lug nuts) so I am sure a collision, wrecker, or parts shop carry them. I paid $1.99 CDN +tax for each and got 2 @ CDN Tire.
