AVOID THIS EBIKE DEALER

Buyers beware, stay FAR away from Top Gun Bikes in Sacramento California. On March 30 2018 I paid 50% down for their top of the line ebike and two weeks later the full balance. As promised by Ren, the owner, the bike was to take five weeks to build and ship. Instead, what I received was a constant stream of feeble excuses, broken promises, missed deadlines and outright lies. After 5 months Ren instructed me to dispute the charges on my MasterCard and then pay him again on a scheduled plan that he failed to honour. At about six months he commissioned the bike to be built by another shop, but when it was ready he did not have the money to pay them so they wouldn’t release it. At seven and a half months I gave him a final deadline 17 days in advance but as he always did before, he never acted with any concern of time and then two days before the deadline tried to negotiate a later date with me. On November30th, eight months after my initial deposit I finally disputed my second series of charges (this time on my Visa card) and walked away. I would never have stuck it out anywhere near that long if this particular bike had been available from someone else. I watched spring, summer and fall pass by as my hope to ride an electric bike in 2018 never materialized. What I did get instead was incredible amounts of stress, anxiety and disappointment. This man is a lowlife and the worst business owner I have ever come across. Do not be fooled by his assurances and smiley emojis, he can not be trusted to keep his word.

<admin note: we learned part way through this thread that this is an online seller with a Sacramento phone number, not a bricks-and-mortar shop.>

Sorry to hear of your troubles, I hope you can find a reputable dealer and have years of e bike fun.

Thank you for posting this. I was going to say that you could report them to your Better Business Bureau, but of course they're not accredited there. There are several online review sites where you should post a review (sitejabber is one).

I looked at Top Gun's website and my hair was prickled by this: "In the event a customer wishes to pursue legal action, he/she is obligated to fully cover all legal defense fees for Top Gun Bikes, LLC".

So if you sue them for any reason whatsoever you would be obligated to pay their legal fees even if you won the lawsuit. I can imagine their legal fees are somewhat considerably (ha), and this was placed on their website for a reason. I've never seen anything like that.

Honestly you're not the first to have experiences like this at shops, I've heard too many horror stories similar to this. Doesn't seem like shops are able to hold their value with online bike companies taking over. If you're not even going to provide excellent service, and your bikes are expensive, why would anyone shop there?

It says on their website, they are ON-LINE sales only....they even clearly state they don't have retail shop...

"OUR SHOP

Times have changed when it comes to retail. We don’t have a retail shop. We don’t need one with the internet. Other than live events or shows, 98% of our new business comes from online sales worldwide (excluding referrals) thru our website/youtube channel/social media."

https://topgunbikes.com/about-us/

And from the same page, this is an interesting statement.....

"When riding the bike how does someone know if the speed traveled is from the rider or motor at that moment. They cant. If you ride the bike RESPONSIBLY and with the flow of traffic and you don’t impede, bother or endanger someone else with your bike then law enforcement does not care regardless if your bike is “Legal” or not at that particular location or at that particular speed. "

(are they suggesting it's ok to buy their ebikes that apparently they 'build in the USA' which go at speeds ranging from 30 mph to 65 mph and you can ride them on public roads ? They even flaunt how they 'get around' motor vehicle license laws. real cute. )

Sorry, but the 'red flags' are all over their website, if you choose to pay attention.

I've worked in bike shops that are on the rocks, or outright failing. The kind of action you've outlined is much worse than what I encountered. In our case we had low stock, and a hard time ordering in new models, especially for a customer who wanted to test ride it. But taking money, not getting the bike for months, having someone else build it, and asking you to refute the charges is quite strange. What bike was it you had to go through them for?

Saying that on a website means nothing.

My thoughts exactly. Those paragraphs would be enough to make me run away from a shop like that. Inexcusable.

Actually, it turns out that this isn't a shop--it's an online seller.

IMO nothing beats a good local bike shop or local dealer that has mechanics with their feet on the ground and tools in hand ready to be helpful when something goes wrong. Prices are higher because there is a cost to make customer support and warranty service locally available. Folks who live in outlying areas may not have this luxury of a local shop that can offer after-sales support. So, we all can't have everything.

I hope you find an ebike you like that works well for you!

Anyone know anything about the new owner???? He says he knows about the past owner and the crap that he pulled and assured us that he isn't like that. He lives in Omaha NE where I live so that makes me feel a little better (I guess). He is supposed to have a physical shop opening soon so IF I buy anything I think I will wait to buy anything until that happens.
