Adding range boost battery to allant+ 8s

Whats involved to add a range boost battery to an allant+ 8s. Is it plug and play or is it a dealer installed item. The salesman I talked to Saturday said that the bike has to go back to Trek to be installed and cannot be done by the local shop. I find this hard to believe thats why I’m asking so see if any one has one

dealers don't have the software to update the motor for it. they could do the hardware part but the software they cant do it.
 
My LBS installed the range boost on my 9.9s locally, after the purchase. This is not standard but can be done. It does take a particularly adept tech. It costs more to do it after the fact than to buy the bike with it out of the box. The parts had to be ordered individually as there is no aftermarket kit on offer. The bike did not have to go back to Trek. To update the system to know there was a second battery on board, they were able to hook up remotely through the Bosch dongle and connected laptop in the local shop

I’m shocked to hear this is that involved. My assumption has always been it was a simple hardware conversion and that a simple LBS firmware update, at most, would need to be done.
Mind if I ask how much that all cost? Was the battery included?

AS I recall it was around $300 parts and labor without a battery. I have two other Bosch powered bikes with 500 watt power packs, one is a dual battery Riese & Muller Delight. Thus I had no need to buy another battery. There are some advantages to staying within an integrated motor battery ecosystem.

Absolutely. That’s why we just ordered an Allant+7 Lowstep recently for my wife. Well it’s one of the reasons why.

I ran into more or less the same problem but for different reasons. Not that I didn't want to send my bike back to trek stateside when I lived there but I was under time constraints due to a move overseas and I didn't want to ship my bike to Trek Germany after being without it for 2 months because of shipping it overseas.

This solved my problem and it offers pros and cons compared to the integrated dual solution.
Big enough for another 625 when you need to go dual.

Well the battery in the pannier is not connected to the bike is it? Its tall enough to hold a Bosch 625?

then it may have been setup for that when it was built.
 
I have that bag and it is not tall enough to close over a 625, perfect for a power pack.
Thanks, I’m sticking with my spare battery tube holder for the near future. Gee, maybe Bosch will have a big sale on Range Boost!🙄
 
I haven't installed one, but when I bought my bike I opened the Range Boost they had in stock, read the manual and studied the parts. It seems pretty clear that a person who does their own bike repairs could easily do this on their own, and certainly could be done at a local shop. The manual mentions the battery should show up on the controller once connected, and suggests that you make sure all the firmware is up to date which your dealer certainly can do.

Sorry, I know this thread is from last year, but any changes that you guys know of for installation? I'm thinking of the range boost option but not if I need to send it back to trek for 2 months - in order to be installed.

As a side note, are spare batteries something a dealer usually has on hand, or should I call and order one - in case the range boost cannot be installed.

I just spoke to my LBS, these can be ordered and installed on sight. I was glad to learn that! I think one issue with bikes right now is finding which parts are in stock. That might be one of the issues.
 
The batteries were in short supply and I had to wait a little about a year ago, I would verify stock.
Wow, it's crazy how bikes are in such short supply right now and even parts... I know Covid has had an impact, but I wonder why so much demand has sprung for bikes all-of-a-sudden (not that that's a bad thing by any means...!). I'm really loving to bike, but range is important because Ebikes are so heavy that it's hard to manually pedal up hills.

Ill ask them about supply, i think my 7S takes the 500 wh battery, so it might be more common than the 625, but ill find out. Thanks for the tip!
 
The built in battery can be either, the external comes only in 500 which is the range booster
