85% of U.S. bike sales are from big box stores ?

By volume, possibly. I’d be surprised if it was that much by value, with the average name brand bike shop bike costing many times as much as the “bike shaped objects” you’ll get from some of the big box stores.

the average unit price of the 14 million or so bicycles sold in the US last year is only $400-500. There are probably 90 $350 bikes, seven $1500 bikes, two $5000 bikes, and one $15,000 bike for every hundred, with the last 10 sold in bike shops. One in ten bikes but half the value.
