Time flies when you're on an ebike.


I was off work yesterday and did a 30 mile jaunt on my Watt Wagons Ultimate Commuter. I'm amazed that I've already covered over 2000 miles. Here are a couple of changes since my last post.

• Finally got a flat tire, but changed the inner tubes and back to weekly tire inflation checks
• The Brooks saddle rail cracked, and I ended up getting a Selle as a replacement

I really can't think of anything I'd change on my current setup, and keeping my mental health during 2020 was due in large part to getting out and about on my Ultimate Commuter.

@pushkar the rear pannier is from a company called Ortlieb. Unfortunately that model is a close out item, but I don't see why Watt Wagons could come out with a similar slogan on their panniers.

Yeah it would be uncool to copy the graphics but 'one less car' isn't something that could be patented. Nor should it be.

@opimax I'm not sure of your question, but if it's "will my spare battery fit in my pannier bag?" the answer is "yes." I keep extra clothes, a water bottle and additional bike lights in my pannier, and including the spare battery isn't a problem.

Different size batterries and different size bags.... does this customized bag hold a Helios battery with the lid closed and not prematurely wear out the bag bottom? I am concerned I need to carry a 3rd battery on my rides of over 100 miles at higher speeds, is this the way to carry a 3rd battery or some other way will be needed?

Carrying batteries is problematical no matter how you do it. I can surely see the need for specifically designed panniers for such a purpose. This is made even more difficult with the reduced triangle of most all MTB bikes nowadays. A more open triangle allows a specific battery bag to be strapped under the top tube as several on the board have given us pics of. Shoot I can't even figure out how to carry a full sized Zefal hand pump.

Rail failed a little while ago on my double rail Brooks B-72 from 1966. I should write & demand a replacement

Your point is excellent. Any real battery carrying designed bag needs to have a much reinforced bottom. AND a specifically constructed compartment I warrant.

the Boach external battery fits the Ortlieb ebag perfectly. A Stromer battery will fit diagonally in a Roller bag from Ortleib but not well and wears holes in the bottom after year or 2, very premature. I just consider this part of the costs of my bike riding but don’t like it much.

I line the bottom and try not to wear the same spot laying batteries differently but sharp cased, large,heavy batteries are just that.

as long as the batteries for Helios aren’t more difficult then the Stromers meaning no
larger mainly, I can get by but hoping for a better solution
