2019 Homage

Do you think that the dual battery will make a difference getting up hills as opposed to just one battery?
Shradda ...
Quick Answer: No!
Considered Answer: Maybe, yes. The second battery will extend your range and, thereby, free you from any some anxiety about running the battery flat as a result of incautious use of Ultra - just climb those hills with maximum assist!

We await horror stories (from San Francisco?) of what happens to E-14 shifting once the battery is flat.

In your Just joined from SF post, Double Helix suggested 65 km as a reasonable range to expect and, based on my experience with the same battery and motor (Trek Powerfly 5 using Sport mainly), I agree. Check with Alaskan who has a Homage Rohloff, and has recorded and analysed ride data using a Nyon display.

This was a hilly ride but nothing like a tour through San Francisco. If I lived and rode there I would definitely ride with two batteries. Although my Homage is a 2018 and has just one battery, I do have a spare to carry in a trunk bag on a long or very hilly ride. With the manual shifting Rohloff, at least I still have more than one gear if I run out of electrons. I thought I wanted an e-14 until I started riding this bike. Working the Rohloff manually is a breeze, dialing in just the right resistance level to maintain cadence and exertion levels. Mastering the momentary hesitation at top center pedal position took just two days of riding, Now it takes no thought or attention.

The E-14 sounds cool but it should have its own emergency battery in case the bike battery is depleted or the Bosch drive system has a problem. This would allow you to pedal home with the full range of gears instead of being stuck in the gear you were in when things went down.

I am not a big fan of the power tube battery. Yes, it has a much nicer aesthetic. However it weighs more and costs more and is too long to fit into a trunk bag.

The one thing the 2019 has that I would like to be able to upgrade on my 2018 is the Gates Carbon Fiber Belt Drive. R&M refuse to accommodate that request.

I have the Fox Float Performance suspension upgrade which apparently is no longer being offered on the 2019 model. I love the ride comfort and control offered by my Homage. I have no basis of comparison to the Suntour suspension but our local bike suspension people tell me that the Fox package was a wise option for superior control and comfort.

I added the following to the bike after delivery:

  1. Adjustable stem to flatten out the stem angle for more aggressive riding position
  2. Bosch Nyon display
  3. Custom made laminated walnut wood fenders
  4. 203mm front brake rotor
  5. Catalyst Flat Pedals with pins
  6. Hebe chain guard
  7. Nip 800 lumen head light
  8. Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires
  9. Kinekt/Cirrus Body Float suspension seat post
  10. Selle Anatomica leather saddle
  11. Erong GP5-L grips
  12. Ortlieb Pro Handlebar bag
  13. Abus Bordo Snap open/close lock holder moved to back of seat tube
  14. and a few other minor tweaks like bottle holder, louder bell, etc.

Over all the Homage is a pure joy to ride, so solid, smooth, lively and responsive. As a bike buddy of mine said after riding the Homage..."That is the S class of bicycles."

Here is a shot taken on Saturday at our local famers market with a basket full of produce.
