Vado 3.0 mysterious mechanical clunking problem

Just an idea ... all these ebikes (including the earlier hub drive Turbos like the one I have) use some form of torque sensor to tell how hard you are pushing the pedals. The system can then adjust how much assist to deliver, based on your input. My bike got very clunky after several months of...

Turbo X became nonresponsive and has been at the shop since late July

Odds are they just need to replace the battery. That's where all the "brains" for the system are. Why haven't they done that yet? Maybe they can't get a replacement battery?

Help with decision to buy 2016 Turbo!

Just a suggestion ... make sure you are not in too high a gear when trying to push the bike up past 20 mph. Slightly lower gears may help you "push" the torque sensor in the rear wheel, thus adding more boost. In my experience there is a tendency with these ebikes to just roll in a high gear...

    The new turbo Vado 2017

I believe you are correct. You can't turn off the lights on motorcycle either, which a Class 3 e-bike sorta is.

Known Issues & Problems with Specialized Products + Help, Solutions & Fixes

I believe that clicking noise may be the torque sensor in the motor. My wife's base Turbo does the exact same thing. I think there is a little bit of "slack" or movement in the drivetrain so it can sense how much pressure you are applying with the pedals. Something like that maybe?

Adjusting Pistons for Brake Rub on Formula C1 (Turbo X)

Disc brake pads are supposed to lightly rub the disc in normal operation. That's how ALL hydraulic discs work. Is that the rubbing you are talking about? The pads do not retract away from the disc when you let off the pressure, they just lightly touch.

    The new turbo Vado 2017

I don't know about the Vado motor arrangement, but using the motor as a "stressed member" of the frame is very common in motorcycles. Basically they use the strength of the motor frame to form an integral part of the frame geometry, thus saving weight, since you can use less frame material. This...

    The new turbo Vado 2017

I would absolutely go for the front shock. The extra weight and power absorbing issues that are a concern on a standard bike are non-issues when you have E power. The extra comfort (and safety at higher speeds) will be well worth it, IMO.

    Replacement front chainring

I went the other way and went lower on the gearing. We have some KILLER hills around where we live. I followed Doug Ruby's instructions and put 4 more teeth on the cassette (biggest sprocket) and 4 fewer teeth on the front crank. Didn't have to touch the chain or derailleur that way. Works like...

Replacing entire Turbo front brake system

If you aren't already doing it, you might want to try switching to "Regen" mode on the long hill down from your house. It will significantly reduce the amount of braking pressure you need AND it put a little bit of juice in the battery to boot! I use Regen all the time on long steep downhills...

    Relocating the tail light

Hey guys, I wanted to show you a super easy relocate for the seat tail light to a rear rack. Why? So you can swap out different seats, of course! And you can use rack top bags without blocking the light. I made a simple plastic angle bracket (from some scrap plastic, bent it to 90 with a heat...

Regearing my 2015/16 base Turbo again

Douglas, I did the 10 speed mods you first tried (44 crank, 36 cassette) and it is working great! Excellent advice. It is plenty low for the hills we encounter, and it seems like the other ratios will work fine for higher speeds. Thanks again for sharing!

Fender job on the Turbo S - an unorthodox approach

Jan, that looks very slick! I'd just leave it on year round ... you never know when you will encounter a puddle, even in summer!

"Efficiency" of Brose mid-drive vs hub

Well, I have two thoughts on this question ... but not an answer. On the issue of gearing, it's a known fact in cars and motorcycles that power is lost as it travels through gear systems. There is a factor of friction and power loss that's just basic physics. On the other issue, some motors...

Some thoughts on buying a new battery for the Turbo

Ah Ann, thank you! I hate riding on the Fear Train! ;) The 5 year thing is true for bicycle companies? I know it's 10 for cars and motorcycle companies.

Some thoughts on buying a new battery for the Turbo

Guys, is anybody else worried about availability of replacement batteries for our bikes going forward? (I'm talking about the "Urban" models, Base, X and S.) I just this week took delivery of a Base model at my LBS and the battery was made in July of 2015, so it's already about 17 months old...

Turbo Batteries - 2013 and beyond

Thank you Douglas. I've really enjoyed all your posts to this forum. Very well thought out and communicated. Let me ask you one more quick question if I may ... I'm a little bit concerned about the Turbo's ability to climb a serious long hill. Where I live in a valley I have to climb up a long...

Turbo Batteries - 2013 and beyond

Mr. Ruby, I have a question for you about Turbo batteries. I just bought a "new" Turbo Base last week and I'm wondering how fresh the battery might be. That's why I put "new in parentheses ... I think all the Base and Xs are sort of old stock they are trying to clear out, and I'm fine with that...
