Welcome to EBR. It was knee pain that got me on an ebike also. After the initial rush of the power and speed of my ebike I now only use enough assist to limit the pain.

You have a 500 watt motor -- if you have a 500 watt motor controller. My 500 watt motor gets fed up to 1500 watts from my 30 amp 52 volt (nominal) controller. The watts your motor consumes depends on the power fed to it by your motor controller.

I believe I'm at five ebikes. Three of those are hub motor ebikes, and the other two are mid-drives. I use a different bike for a different use.

You'll need some lower gears in a hub drive for the steeper hills. My hub motor bike has 24 gears, my 750w mid-drive has 8. Their riding performance is similar. The 500w hub motor I have pulls up to 1400w, so that power sure helps on steep hills.
